It’s said that being an international player increases a footballer’s value, but there are many examples of Premier League clubs paying massive transfer fees for uncapped players.

Jamie Gittens has become the latest one as Chelsea have completed a deal worth up to £55.5 million with Borussia Dortmund.

But where does the winger rank among the most expensive players to get a big money transfer before winning their first cap for England?

5. Max Kilman – £40m

Last summer West Ham United spent £40m to buy Max Kilman from Wolves. The dependable centre-back has yet to earn an England cap, although Andriy Shevchenko tried to recruit him for the Ukraine national team. Unfortunately, he is ineligible to play for them due to playing competitive futsal for England in the past. He is also eligible to play for Russia through one of his parents.

=3. Morgan Gibbs-White – £42.5m

Another Wolves sale. Wanderers sold Morgan Gibbs-White to Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest for £25m with another potential £17m in add-ons in 2022. It was money well spent and the midfielder has since gone on to win four caps for England.

=3. Cole Palmer – £42.5m

When Chelsea bought Cole Palmer two years ago, he was a bit-part player in Pep Guardiola’s squad at Manchester City and nowhere near the England team. Now it’s difficult to imagine him not being the future of it. Probably the best £42.5m the Blues have ever spent.

2. Aaron Wan-Bissaka – £50m

One of many Manchester United players who never quite lived up to the price tag in recent years. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s recovery speed and ball-winning ability weren’t enough to win over the fans or Gareth Southgate following his £50m move from Crystal Palace in 2019.

In May this year the full-back officially switched his allegiance to DR Congo.

1. Jamie Gittens – £55.5m*

Perhaps in the past a player like Jamie Gittens would have been fast tracked to the senior England squad due to his prodigious talent, but the strength in depth means he would have to be otherworldly for that to happen. With the World Cup next summer, it will be interesting to see if he can convince Thomas Tuchel to call him up following his move to Stamford Bridge.
