The European title races going down to the wire this season

There are few things more thrilling in football than a title race that is too close to call heading into the final weeks of the season.
Unfortunately, we did not get that in the Premier League this year as Liverpool streaked away from the rest. Bayern Munich and Barcelona have managed to comfortably pull away from their challengers in the Bundesliga and La Liga respectively, while Ligue 1 was a foregone conclusion.
But there are three major European leagues with incredibly tight title races heading into the final few weeks, or in the case of one, the final weekend.
Reigning champions Inter are the best team in Italy, but their European exploits have seen them take their eye off the ball domestically. Simeone Inzaghi’s side will face PSG in the Champions League final, albeit at a cost.
The Nerazzurri were dumped out of the Coppa Italia semi-finals by AC Milan in between consecutive defeats in Serie A in April, allowing Napoli to get the jump on them.
Antonio Conte’s men have lost just two league games in 2025 to propel them to top spot, although they could only draw with Genoa last Sunday, reducing their lead to one point with two games remaining. Still, it’s been a remarkable recovery following their dreadful title defence last season, in no small part inspired by former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.
Napoli face easier opposition in Parma and Cagliari, although both clubs will be highly motivated to avoid relegation. Inter, meanwhile, face a Lazio team chasing a top four place and Como, who are on a six-game winning streak but have nothing to play for.
What makes this title race most intriguing is that the Scudetto could be decided by a play-off if both teams end up level on points. Head-to-head record, rather than goal difference, is used as the tie-breaker, and they have drawn each time they met this season.
Now this is what we like to see; with one round of games left in the Portuguese top flight, Sporting and Benfica are level on points. Whoever blinks first, loses.
The two clubs faced off in what was meant to be a title decider this past weekend. Francisco Trinçao opened the scoring after three minutes before Vangelis Pavlidis produced some magic to set up Kerem Aktürkoğlu for the equaliser.
The contest ended all square to set up a nail-biting finale as Sporting host Vitoria, while Benfica travel to Braga. The Lisbon outfit hold the advantage as they have the better head-to-head record, owing to their 1-0 win in December, meaning The Eagles need a favour from Vitoria to lift the title on Saturday.
The two sides come together eight days later for the Taça de Portugal final. Tasty.
Like Napoli, Ajax have bounced back from a disastrous campaign to put themselves within touching distance of glory. Last season they were 45 points off the pace as PSV Eindhoven beat Arne Slot’s Feyenoord to the title.
This year, under the guidance of Francesco Farioli, a 36-year-old Italian coach, the Amsterdam outfit lead the Eredivisie by a point with two games to go. They are stumbling towards the finish line, however, having failed to win any of their last three outings.
Ajax appeared to be cruising to their 37th league title after beating PSV at the end of March, but Peter Bosz’s team have reeled them in with five consecutive wins since that encounter.
PSV now have to beat Heracles and Sparta Rotterdam, and hope Groningen or FC Twente do them a favour against Ajax in the next fortnight.
