As Manchester City continue their rebuild this summer it does represent the end of an era. So far, Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne have left the club on permanent deals to Burnley and Napoli, respectively. Those two were pillars of Manchester City’s era of dominance that ended last season. But those two players may not be the only two pillars of City’s success to leave this summer. Manchester City’s number-one keeper, Ederson, has been heavily linked with a move to Galatasaray. Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford has been linked with a return to Manchester City in recent days.
If Ederson were to leave City and James Trafford were to arrive at the Etihad, it could represent the end of one era at the club and the beginning of another. In a summer of change at Manchester City, it would be yet another shift in preparation for a new era of success at the club.
Rob McCarthy has reported for TeamTalk that Galatasaray are set to open talks with Manchester City over the potential sale of Ederson. Furthermore, McCarthy reports that Ederson has agreed on personal terms with Galatasaray.
It is further reported by Rob McCarthy that Manchester City have opened negotiations with Burnley over the signing of James Trafford. Furthermore, McCarthy reports that City are attempting to negotiate a transfer fee below the £40 million buy-back clause they hold with the young goalkeeper. It is further reported by McCarthy that Newcastle United was interested in signing Trafford. But City are now in pole position to sign Trafford. Lastly, McCarthy reports that Burnley is interested in signing Stefan Ortega as a replacement for Trafford.
Based on Rob McCarthy’s report, Manchester City are pushing hard to sign James Trafford. Whether it is Stefan Ortega or Ederson who leaves City this summer, Trafford would be a quality replacement. The young goalkeeper is 22 years of age and looks set for a long and successful career at the very top. Nothing is stopping Trafford from becoming Manchester City’s number one keeper if he did sign for the club, given his talent and potential. But for the James Trafford era to begin at City, one era may end. It could be that Ederson departs for Galatasaray to give Trafford a run at being Manchester City’s number one keeper.
During his time at City, Ederson has been a mainstay in Pep Guardiola’s lineup. Since arriving at Manchester City from Benfica the Brazilian keeper has played a key role in City’s era of dominance. With his quality in possession, Ederson has had a key role in Pep Guardiola’s side’s style of play and dominance. Without him, Pep Guardiola’s side may not have won 18 trophies during Ederson’s time at the club. The Brazilian international also played a key role in Manchester City’s maiden UEFA Champions League triumph in 2023. He made a string of quality saves to preserve Manchester City’s 1-nil lead over Inter Milan in Istanbul. That performance was typical of Ederson at his best. It may well be the performance looked back upon as the defining display of his time at Manchester City.
But it appears that Ederson’s era at Manchester City may be nearing an end. If that proves to be the case the James Trafford era may begin at City. That’s been the story of Manchester City’s summer: one era ends, and another is set to begin. Heading into a new week the goalkeeping situation at City may be a major story to watch develop.
