Phil Foden has been below his best this season for Manchester City. That isn’t a stretch, it’s just the reality of his performances on the pitch. It has appeared this season that the toll of the game has caught up to Foden. There have been flashes of his quality this season, but the usual zest, energy and quality that is associated with Foden’s game has been missing. Now the England international has explained why his form has suffered this season. He also revealed that he is hopeful of returning to his best next season.
In an interview published by Joe Bray for the Manchester Evening News, Phil Foden has opened up about his struggles this season. He revealed that he has faced a mental battle this season. Speaking on the issues he has faced this season, Foden explained: “It’s been a frustrating season for me. I’ve had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally. It’s one of them, sometimes there are things in life that are bigger than football.”
“This season, I’ve struggled a little bit. Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right, get back where I left the season before because I know what I’m capable of doing and the quality I have.”
Phil Foden added that he remains hopeful of getting back to his best. He added: “The club have been so supportive. I can’t thank them enough. I know if everything was okay, I’d definitely be better on the field. Sometimes things happen and you have to deal with it and move on. Unfortunately, I’ve had a difficult season. Now it’s just about improving and getting back to my best. I know my standards that I can reach. I’m looking forward to getting back.”
It has been clear throughout this season that something has been off with Phil Foden. But what isn’t apparent is the mental battle that players go through off the pitch. Foden’s reveal is a brave one, but it does explain his severe drop-off in form this season. But as important as football is and seems to be, Foden’s mental health and well-being are far more important than his performances. The hope is that Foden can return to his best on the pitch next season after such a trying 24/25 season.
Phil Foden has also battled injuries this season. He further revealed that he has played through the pain barrier since Manchester City’s nil-all draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford at the beginning of April. That has compounded the stress of the season on Foden. It has been a tough season for Foden and his revelation is a brave one. He deserves credit for being so open with the mental battle he has battled this season.
