For the Teessiders, Michael Carrick's side are looking to snap a two-game losing streak with a much-needed home win, as they go in search of a play-off finish.

As for Plymouth, however, they are desperately seeking what would be a huge away victory in the North East, as they find themselves three points adrift of safety, and with time quickly running out to save their season.

Carrick may not wish to label this game as a "must-win", but try telling both sets of supporters that!

Football League World takes a look at all the Middlesbrough and Plymouth players who won't be playing any part in this big Easter weekend clash, starting with the home side.

Alex Bangura

Alex Bangura has endured a torrid time with injuries since his summer 2023 move to Middlesbrough from SC Cambuur.

The 25-year-old left-back hasn't played a game all season for Boro due to undergoing surgery on his Achilles in early August, with his last appearance coming on the final day of last season v Watford.

It's not yet clear whether he will be fit in time to play any part in Boro's season before the curtain falls.

Ben Doak

Perhaps the absence that Middlesbrough are feeling the hardest at this moment in time - Ben Doak had been enjoying a superb season on Teesside.

That was until the Liverpool loanee was forced to undergo thigh surgery in March, with the 19-year-old right-winger not being seen since the away defeat to Preston on 25 January.

As such, the Scottish international has returned to Liverpool to continue his recovery, and whilst Carrick has refused to rule out the possibility of him returning to Boro before the end of the season, that prospect is looking increasingly unlikely.

Neto Borges

A player who has been enjoying a Riverside turnaround in recent weeks - Neto Borges has gone from Boro boo-boy, to being one of the most beloved members of the squad.

However, after suffering an ankle injury after an awkward fall against Blackburn Rovers, the Brazilian left-back - who had been filling in as a makeshift centre-back in recent games - looks set to miss the remainder of the campaign.

Darragh Lenihan

Another player who has yet to feature for Middlesbrough this season - Darragh Lenihan has become somewhat of a forgotten man on Teesside as a result.

The 31-year-old central defender hasn't played a competitive fixture for Boro since September 2023, having initially required ankle surgery that ruled him out of the final eight months of last season.

However, after suffering Achilles tendinitis in pre-season amongst other niggling problems throughout the campaign, the Republic of Ireland international now looks set to miss the entirety of this season too.

Luke Ayling

A disappointing season for Luke Ayling has only gotten worse in recent days, as the veteran right-back has undergone ankle surgery.

As such, the 33-year-old defender has now been ruled out for the remainder of the season, leaving Carrick's options in that department extremely thin.

Seny Dieng

Another who has been ruled out for the rest of the season, goalkeeper Seny Dieng may well have already played his final game in a Middlesbrough shirt.

The Senegal international underwent surgery on his Achilles in January, having already lost his place as Boro's number one shot-stopper by that point.

Sol Brynn

Sol Brynn was looking like number one goalkeeper material for Middlesbrough up until Boxing Day, when he would suffer a dislocated shoulder v Sheffield Wednesday.

Having not been seen since, there is hope that he may still be able to return to the squad in some capacity before the end of the season, but he would likely have to settle for a backup role given the impressive displays of Bournemouth loanee Mark Travers since arriving in the winter window.

Matty Sorinola

One of the brighter spots in what has otherwise been a fairly dismal season for Plymouth Argyle, right wing-back Matty Sorinola has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old has suffered a quadriceps injury, which was something he picked up during Argyle's 3-0 loss to Swansea City on 9 April.

Brendan Galloway

Brendan Galloway is another Pilgrims defender who won't be playing any further part in the club's survival bid this season.

The 29-year-old centre-back had his season ended back in January, after requiring surgery to the upper part of his leg.

Maksym Talovierov

Having initially been ruled out for the rest of the season following a knee injury in late-March, it would appear that Maksym Talovierov could in fact return for Plymouth before the end of the campaign.

The Ukrainian international has revealed that his recovery has been quicker than expected, and now the central defender is targeting a return for the final two games of the season.

Unfortunately for Plymouth, that won't come in time for their trip to Teesside.

Nikola Katic

Whilst centre-back Nikola Katic does appear to have a chance of returning for Plymouth's Easter Monday meeting with Coventry City, the Bosnian international won't be fit in time to play any part against Middlesbrough on Good Friday.

That will be a big blow for Argyle too, as the 28-year-old has been one of Miron Muslic's standout performers since his January arrival on loan from Swiss side FC Zurich.
