Toulouse FC made the appointment of Carles Martinez Novell as head coach official on Wednesday, bringing an end to the reign of Philippe Montanier, who guided the south-western club back to the top flight and oversaw Coupe de France glory and a superb top-flight campaign in 2022-23.

Change of coach at Toulouse FC. The most recent Coupe de France winners announced on Wednesday that they were parting company with their coach Philippe Montanier, to be replaced by his assistant Carles Martinez Novell. Comolli: 'Decisive turning point'

The 39-year-old Spaniard arrived on the banks of the Garonne river last December, having previously worked at Barcelona's youth academy La Masia and with a number of youth teams in Spain and the Gulf states. The length of his contract was not disclosed by Les Violets.

"Since his arrival, he has shown remarkable commitment and played an essential role in the team's progress, particularly during the victory in the Coupe de France," Toulouse president Damien Comolli, the man entrusted by Le Téfécé's American owners to run the club, said in a statement. "His tactical knowledge and training methods have helped develop our playing identity and strengthen our team. Our club is at a decisive turning point in its development. As we embark on this new cycle, we are convinced that Carles is the right person to help us achieve our ambitions."

Exits

Novell will be in charge of a re-worked squad, as influential Dutch/Flemish trio Branco van den Boomen, Stijn Spierings and Brecht Dejaegere - not to mention 'keeper Maxime Dupé and English forward Rhys Healey - have left the club since a successful 2022-23 campaign ended with a 13th-placed finish. Montanier leaves the club with legend status, having brought two of the club's four trophies - the 2021-22 Ligue 2 BKT title and the 2022-23 Coupe de France - to a club who only previous silverware was a pair of Ligue 1 BKT titles from 1981-82 and 2002-03.
