Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag publicly spoke about the midfielder’s exit for the first time during a pre-match press conference on Friday.

“I’m very happy for him and for us, but it’s mixed [feelings] because I would have preferred not to lose him. He has Manchester United in his veins,” he said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately, it’s the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sells and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value. It’s not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it’s a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player but also for us.”

McTominay is expected to complete a permanent €30.5m deal and sign a four-year contract. The Scotland international will likely be on the bench in tomorrow’s Serie A clash against Parma.

According to Sky Sport Italia, McTominay will be joined by his compatriot Billy Gilmour in Naples as the Brighton midfielder will undergo medicals for the Partenopei in England today before completing a €14m transfer.

McTominay scored 29 goals in 255 games with the Red Devils.
