It was a day of first for Celtic FC Women’s defender Sydney Cummings, who got her first taste of the Scottish Cup during the Ghirls’ impressive 7-0 win over Ayr United.
After arriving in the summer, the centre-back has quickly made an impression for the Hoops and will be hoping to play her part in yet more trophy success as the squad aims to reach the showpiece match of the campaign for the third season running.
Not only did Cummings get her first taste of the competition, but she was also on hand to score her first goal for the club, with a powerful strike from range.
Following her recent absence from injury, it was the ideal way for the defender to mark her return to action by getting on the scoresheet for the first time for the Hoops.
Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the match, the Guyanian internationalist was delighted to be back out on the pitch and contributing in front of goal.
She said: “It was nice to be back out there. Coming back from injury can obviously be difficult, but the team has been great and really helped me this week at training.
‘So I just had the ball, thought I’d give it a go and it’s just one of those days where it goes for you.’
“I’ve definitely missed a couple in previous games where I have felt like I should have put them away. It feels like it’s always the ones where you take a chance that end up going in!
“But regardless, I’m happy to have my first goal for the club.”
After picking up an injury prior to the Celts’ Sky Sports Cup outing against Glasgow City in November, it has been just over two months since Cummings was in action.
So it was the ideal way for the defender to kick-off the New Year, by marking her return from injury and getting amongst the goals.
Sunday’s Scottish Cup victory over Ayr United allowed Cummings and the rest of the Celtic squad an opportunity to dust off any cobwebs following the conclusion of the most recent international break.
The 24-year-old is now hoping that she and her team-mates can continue to kick on as they gear up for league duties next Sunday against Montrose.
“I definitely needed the minutes,” she explained. “It’s very cathartic. It was nice to go home over the winter break, and see family and friends.
“It was a good reset, obviously with my injury and all of that too. But when you come back, you are just buzzing to get on. So this week has been really good.”
'This is what we wanted and talked about all week. Building that momentum going forward.'
“January is obviously a big month for us, so we wanted to get off on the right foot.”
