Manchester City have finalised and confirmed the loan exit of summer signing Sverre Nypan, who joins Middlesbrough on loan for the 2025/26 campaign.

The highly-rated Norwegian midfielder only joined City from Rosenborg a month ago, in a £12.5 million move, with the player having already amassed significant senior experience in his homeland with 70 appearances and 14 goals before his Premier League switch.

His first step in English football will now come in the Championship, where one club have been quick to secure his services on a season-long loan, fending off significant competition from across Europe – with up to eight clubs believed to have registered interest.

The move also follows a wider theme in Manchester City’s summer business, with several new signings being given immediate pathways to competitive first-team action through loans rather than immediate integration into Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Now, as confirmed by all parties on Tuesday, Sverre Nypan joins Middlesbrough on loan for the now-ongoing 2025/26 campaign, in what will be his first step in English football having joined Manchester City earlier this summer.

For Middlesbrough, Nypan’s arrival continues a busy summer of recruitment under Rob Edwards, who is aiming to assemble a side capable of challenging for promotion to the Premier League.

Nypan becomes their fifth addition of the window, joining Alfie Jones, Callum Brittain, Abdoulaye Kante, and Sontje Hansen, and was unveiled to supporters at the Riverside on Monday, signing autographs and meeting fans during the club’s annual open training session.

City’s decision to send him on loan reflects the club’s measured approach to developing young players. Having signed a five-year contract with the Premier League giants, there is little doubt that the long-term plan is for Nypan to eventually compete for a place in Guardiola’s squad.

However, with fierce competition in Manchester City’s midfield – bolstered further this summer by the arrivals of Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders – the Championship offers an opportunity for him to gain valuable experience in a physically demanding league.

For Middlesbrough, the deal is seen as a coup. The teenager was recently named by a British newspaper as one of the best players in the world for his age, and his arrival at the Riverside demonstrates City’s willingness to trust Boro with the development of such a high-profile young talent.

Looking ahead, Nypan’s performances will be monitored closely by City staff. A strong campaign in the Championship could accelerate his pathway into the Premier League, either with City or as part of a carefully managed loan plan similar to what other talents have experienced.
