The next two Newcastle United matches are to be impacted by suspensions.
The Champions League qualification chase getting ever more competitive.
Newcastle United fans welcoming all the extra advantages they can get.
This weekend’s Premier League matches saw two red cards that will affect the next two NUFC matches.
Lifelong Newcastle United fan Leif Davis will miss next Saturday’s game at St James’ Park, the Geordie left-back is one of Ipswich’s better players but was red carded on Sunday due to a poor challenge on Bukayo Saka.
Almost certainly more of an impact though, is that Brighton will be missing their top scorer in 13 days time, when Newcastle United visit.
Joao Pedro is the only Brighton player to hit double figures in the Premier League this season and scored in each of their three most recent PL victories.
However, the Brighton top scorer petulantly lashed out on Saturday in an off the ball incident with Brentford’s Nathan Collins. Red carded for violent conduct and that carries a three match suspension, so it will include the Newcastle match.
Newcastle United have had no Premier League red cards at all since the opening day of the season, when that Southampton player conned the referee into sending Fabian Schar off, the NUFC defender getting a three match ban.
One of the few positives on Saturday at Villa Park, was that the United players showed enough discipline not to turn a bad defeat into something even worse, with any player(s) missing one or more of the remaining five PL matches due to suspension.
Three yellow cards but no reds, as the useless Aussie referee fell for the clearly premeditated Villa plan of their players throwing themselves to the ground whenever the likes of Bruno and Joelinton came near them. Both Brazilians booked as well as Schar, whilst it took until the 88th minute for the single Villa yellow card.
Picking up 26 yellow cards in the opening 10 Premier League matches, it looked like Newcastle United would be heading for serious disciplinary problems as the season went on.
The Premier League rules are that if you pick up five bookings in the opening 19 PL games of the season, you get a one match suspension.
Then 10 yellow cards within the first 32 PL games of the season earns a two game ban.
With a three game suspension if you manage to pick up 15 yellow cards in a Premier League season.
After 33 Newcastle United matches in the Premier League this season, here is the situation with PL yellow cards..
The 2024/25 Premier League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:
10 Joelinton
6 Bruno
5 Tonali
3 Hall, Murphy
2 Gordon, Longstaff, Kelly, Pope, Willock
1 Wilson, Livramento, Botman, Isak, Trippier
After the 26 yellow cards in the opening 10 Premier League matches, only 32 bookings in the next 23 PL games (numbers 11 to 33).
Joelinton thankfully not picking up his 10th PL yellow card of the season until the 33rd Premier League game of this campaign.
This is how it currently looks (Monday 21 April 2025) when it comes to the three Premier League clubs with most bookings this season and the three with the least (the number of bookings is ahead of each team):
