The City defender will take the skipper's armband for the first time in the absence of Harry Kane and says it is a moment he will "cherish forever."

Stones made his England debut more than 10 years ago, starting for the first time against Peru in May 2014.

With 81 caps under his belt already, the game against Greece on Thursday evening is set to be his most memorable yet for the Three Lions.

"It's everything I could have dreamed of as a kid," beamed Stones.

"More for my family, to be able to see me walk out as England captain is a special moment. One I can't thank Lee (Carsley) enough for. An incredible moment for me.

"To be walking out with the armband on is an absolute honour and a moment I'll cherish forever."

Interim England boss Carsley' has proved a hit with the players and England fans alike with his first two games seeing the national team play with a more expansive, attacking style.

And Stones says he is enjoying the experience so far.

"[The change from Southgate] has been quite seamless, which is credit to Lee and his team," he said.

"We've had a great foundation, I know Lee in the background has been a part of that.

"He's put his own style on what he wants, which has been refreshing and good to work with. Now it's about putting that into practice and to go out and deliver not only for ourselves but for Lee and his staff and the hard work we do on the training pitch.

"Tactically there have been changes. I think that happens with every manager. What they see and want to bring out of us in players.

"He's made it as simple as possible for us to go out and express ourselves. The main aim is to enjoy it."

Congratulations to John from everyone at Manchester City.
