Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham must think like Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, after defender Cristian Romero appeared to criticise the club’s hierarchy following Sunday’s defeat to Enzo Maresca’s side.
The Argentine World Cup winner, took aim at the Spurs mentality and said the club should imitate Chelsea, Liverpool and City.
Postecoglou, who is returning to Scotland to face former arch-rivals Rangers at Ibrox in the Europa League, said Tottenham must think like those clubs, as being able to compete financially is out of the question.
“Look it depends kind of in what respect,” Postecoglou told reporters
“I think we know there are things that we can compete with. I don’t think it’s just about finances.
“I think yes finances, where the club sits, we know there’s a gap but not between just us, with most clubs.
“So we understand that but within that context, I think it doesn’t mean you can’t be competitive in your own way.
“I think what Cristian was talking about, and it’s what I believe as well, is that we should aim to think like those clubs and try and be successful every year.”
Postecoglou is expecting a hot welcome from the Rangers supporters with the former Celtic manager making his first return to Ibrox since leaving Scotland for Tottenham back in the summer of 2023.
“I think you know what kind of reception I’ll get. I loved it,” he added.
“It was different experiences, mixed. I think the first one we were here we lost and then the next one when we only had 500-600 in the building we won and that was pretty special.
“But I’ve enjoyed all the games against Rangers, all the derbies, the big games here at Scotland obviously and usually very significant games.”
