Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘Another great win, this time digging deep in the second half after we’d done the damage in the first half.
Winning in a different way to the last few games and hats off to the team as you could see the fatigue, but they dug deep.
Back to London on Tuesday and hopefully a positive result that we can take back home for the second leg.
What a run we are on, what a team, exciting times.’
Billy Miller:
‘2025 has started precisely how 2024 ended.
The Villa, Man U, Spurs games were going to be a tricky prospect, so to take all 9 points is phenomenal.
Botman back and, although not 100%, didn’t look like a man that hadn’t played competitively for 9 months.
Isak matches Shearer and Willock’s joint record for Premier League games scored in, in a row. Who would bet against him beating it?’
David Punton:
‘The brilliant form continues with a magnificent win away in London.
Always nice to beat this lot.
They may have injuries but they were still a threat in attack.
It was great to see us come back so quick to 1-1 and then Isak getting his customary goal.
The second half was a slog as you feel the festive programme taking its toll.
We’re maybe a tad fortunate to come away with all three points.
A big talking point is referee Andy Madley – who seemed to implement a play all night until Spurs score policy.
Just the 14 added minutes to hang on. That was tense – but we did it.
Great to see Botman back, and hope he’s okay.’
GToon:
‘Brilliant win again today.
I thought it would be a tough game and it was.
We dug in today and had to show our defensive qualities. We look like a top team again.
It was great celebrating at home and laughing at the appallingly biased commentary.
Is TNT Tottenham’s Tv?
When we had to score we cut through them with ease. The front three look top class. Another great cross from Murphy.
If we’d just bought him for 60m we’d be saying how amazing he is.
Can anyone tell me how the shoulder into the face on Gordon isn’t a foul? That’s twice now he’s had that done and nothing given. Ridiculous.
Anyway onwards and upwards. Toon Army!’
Bazoox:
‘After all the talk about their injury and illness crisis, the Spurs squad looked okay to me.
After coming back from a goal down in the first half to lead 2-1, we sat back in the second period.
The second half was awful from a United perspective.
We held on though because Spurs are woeful in the final third.
At the end of the day it’s another fine away result on the bounce.’
Davey Hat-Trick:
‘Well, that one will be filed under ‘won ugly’.
Started nervously, conceded, then equalised and took control of the first half.
Scored another, could have scored more, and then Tottenham woke up for the second half.
You could say they controlled the rest of the game, but we had chances, and theirs weren’t very clear-cut.
Livramento and BDB were impressive, but everyone played their part in defending the Newcastle goal.
There will be some tired legs on the journey home.
But three points against another of the ‘big’ six, we’ve done the double over Spurs, and we have a good grip on 5th place.
Onward and upward…’
Mark Jankowski:
‘Spurs started fast but Newcastle’s recent confidence quickly shone through.
Newcastle jumped on some loose play from the hosts and Gordon finished well to level the score.
The midfield grew into the game and it led to a dominant first half performance where we maybe should have scored more.
Second half was a more uncomfortable watch with Newcastle managing the game but Dubravka largely untested.
The ref seemed to find the missing stoppage time from Liverpool and decided to tack it on today but a job well done by NUFC.
Champions League is well and truly on!’
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey:
‘Six in a row!
Brilliant win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Last time we did that we went on to a Wembley final and secured a Champions League berth. What price that happening again?
BDB was immense. Tino very good also.
Great to see Botman back and Isak is in seventh heaven!’
The Armchair Fan:
‘GET IN! Six wins in a row!
Incredibly nervewracking second half but we were able to grind out the win and that’s the mark of a good side.
Delighted with that!
Think I need a lie down.’
Jamie Smith:
‘I have to say, when I saw Tottenham’s sick list and starting squad I felt like we could win this one.
It turned out a lot closer than I’d hoped, but following up the Old Trafford win with 3 points at Spurs is amazing stuff.
Champions league charge is definitely on, as it’s back to the challenge of beating sides who come to SJP to sit deep and spoil.
The chances are there to build on this with the forthcoming fixture list if we can keep this momentum going.
Next up though is a massive game and a quick return to North London for the semi with Arsenal.
Thought Botman looked great on his return, hopefully just a bit of cramp and he can be part of a similar solid rearguard at the Emirates.
Excellent away performance.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Two teams who maybe had an eye on a bigger prize next week.
We got caught cold for the first with Sven looking at fault letting Solanke get ahead of him. But we shot straight back going in 2-1 up at ht.
Then after the break we inexplicably sat back allowing Tottenham a foothold back into the game.
What’s starting to annoy me is our tactics of going into the lead and sitting back with a mix of stoic defending, isak posing a threat up front.
But what’s really starting to nark me is our outrageous diving and cheating along with a massive dose of time wasting hoyed in for good measure.
When the 4th official announced ten minutes, I turned to Chrissy Numbers and said is that all. We have top end Premier League players so why resort to this?? We’re Geordies, we’re better than this.’
