Southampton and Alex McCarthy are to pause any potential contract talks and meetings to allow full focus on the play-offs.

The once-capped England international is currently the Saints' first choice goalkeeper following Gavin Bazunu's late-season injury that has seen him ruled out until at least 2025.

However, McCarthy's deal only runs until the end of this season, and with the 34-year-old proving crucial in Southampton's first leg goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion last Sunday, Saints' fans will hope interest from Liverpool, Newcastle and Celtic is ignored and a new deal is signed.

Russell Martin: Discussions will have to wait until end of season

In his build up for tonight's game, Southampton boss Martin revealed the news about the contract discussions that are set to be had with Alex McCarthy, and others who have deals expiring this summer.

Reported by the Southern Daily Echo, Martin said, "It's just (been about) letting Alex focus on his football. It's been about letting him perform.

"He's been fantastic, he's been so good since he came into the team. He brings a real calm and influence, (he's) been great with his feet and with his hands. He was massive on Sunday, we're going to need that again for sure.

"For now the focus for everyone, Che (Adams), Alex, Stu (Armstrong), is about getting the club promoted. That has to be the aim and then, whenever the season finishes, hopefully not for another 10 days or so, we will all sit down.

"There's been conversations throughout the year. Everyone is really clear. There has not been a silence about the situation. There isn't going to be a surprise or anything. I think a lot will depend on what happens, and the players know that.

"It's to everyone's benefit to win this game tomorrow night and do everything they possibly can to do that. We will cross the bridge about contracts when the season ends."

Interest from Liverpool, Celtic could tempt McCarthy away

With the decisive leg of the play-off semi finals to be played tonight, there is still no guarantee that Southampton will be able to offer Premier League football to McCarthy, and, despite knowing now that contract talks are being paused, this still may factor into the Englishman's thoughts, especially given that he has interest being shown from top flight clubs.

Both Liverpool and Celtic, as well as Newcastle are reportedly circling for the keeper's services, with both clubs having a rejig of their goalkeeping department.

Celtic will be saying goodbye to veteran Joe Hart following his retirement announcement in February, and Adrian looks set to depart Anfield following the expiry of his contract and two years of zero appearances as third choice keeper at Liverpool.

Both have identified McCarthy as a suitable replacement for their situations, and it will now come down to what happens in the play-offs as to whether McCarthy signs a new deal at St Mary's or departs to one of the mentioned clubs this summer.
