Plymouth Argyle’s thoroughly deserved victory over Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday was undoubtedly one of THE best results this season.
The Championship strugglers humbled their opponents to book their place in round five and end the Reds’ hopes of winning the quadruple.
The result also highlighted why the mind-numbing clamour to blow smoke up Liverpool’s backsides may be a tad premature.
The Championship strugglers ruthlessly punished Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s decision to make ten changes to his starting line-up.
However, the team he picked should still have been capable of winning at Plymouth. It was packed with international players, and they fluffed their lines.
The defeat ended Liverpool’s hopes of winning the quadruple and raised questions about what they may achieve during the rest of the campaign.
While Slot’s side are flying high at the top of the Premier League, they have undoubtedly been helped by other top teams underperforming.
The defeat at Plymouth highlights why the chasing pack should not give up hope of overhauling Liverpool on the run-in.
It also calls into question whether they have the necessary squad depth to keep their hopes of winning the Champions League alive.
Plymouth probably won’t win the FA Cup this season, but they deserve everyone’s gratitude for demonstrating that Liverpool are not all they are cracked up to be.
