Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of achieving top-four finish in the Bundesliga and with it a coveted UEFA Champions League spot for the 2025-26 season hang by a thread, reports Sky Germany.
Supercomputer and reliable sports data company Opta believe there is a mere 5.1% chance of BVB qualifying for Europe’s premier competition which requires achieving a 4th-place finish come the end of 2024-25 campaign.
Opta calculated and predicted all of Borussia Dortmund’s final league fixtures and the prognosis doesn’t look too good - considering Die Schwarzgelben sit in 11th-place after 21 rounds of action, Niko Kovac will need to steer the ship around rather quickly.
What will be even more alarming for fans of the black and yellow clad club is the data Opta produced before the season started. With a 78.4% chance of qualifying before a ball rolled, it appeared BVB would be destined to capture another Champions League place.
Furthermore, the financial implications could prove even more detrimental with the club’s considerable reliance on earnings from the tournament in previous campaigns.
Although participation at the forthcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States may soften that blow, the potential loss of Champions League football would mean reduced income and one less factor to attract the world’s hottest footballing talents in the summer transfer window.
Retaining the services of key players within the squad like Gregor Kobel, who has reportedly caught the eye of English Premier League side Chelsea, could become increasingly tricky too.
