Andriy Shevchenko believes that there is a lot of ‘confusion’ inside the AC Milan ranks at present, but warned that nobody has a ‘magic wand’ to fix things.
Milan are currently enduring one of their most difficult moments in recent memory, with the team currently ninth in the table and out of the Champions League having been eliminated by Feyenoord.
Not only that, but there is a whirlwind of news surrounding the club, from the Sergio Conceicao spokesperson saga to the talk of infighting within the management.
It is a far cry from the great times seen during the 1990s and 2000s, which Shevchenko was a part of. Now, there is an obligation to finish the season in the best possible way, to salvage some pride.
Shevchenko spoke during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport about the current state of his beloved former club, and he was critical of the current leadership.
How do you see your Milan in this complicated moment?
“I don’t see it that well. The results don’t help, there’s a bit of confusion, there’s a lot of controversy. I say this as a Milan fan, as someone who loves the team, who loves the club and who loves the fans. I think we need to have clearer ideas, especially for next season.”

How can they get out of this situation?
“In such difficult times we need to be more united. We need to try to create a positive moment. For example, winning the next match against Lecce could help a lot.”
Do you think this reconstruction should start from the top?
“We need more clarity. I can’t make judgments, but I feel like giving this advice, to look ahead and be able to improve the situation because Milan is a special team. Everyone knows it, there is a lot of pressure and a lot of responsibility when you are at Milan.”
You were one of the flags of a Milan with a strong identity, a strong ownership that had President Berlusconi as a point of reference. Do you think this is missing from today’s team?
“Even in our Milan we went through difficult moments. But there was a true captain on the field, Paolo Maldini. There was a great figure like Adriano Galliani, there was a club that was always behind the players and coaches. In difficult moments we need to unite more and believe in the project.”
Do you like Sergio Conceiçao as a coach?
“He’s trying to save the season, to make a change. I was a coach too, I know that a coach only thinks about the good of the team and the club and sacrifices himself, that he has in his head from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to sleep only how to improve the situation of the group. I believe in the professionalism of every coach: I think Conceiçao is trying to save the season.”
But can this season still be saved?
“You can never let a season go, but now you have to have very clear ideas about what you want to do in the next one. You always have to try to do your best: on the pitch, in every training session, in every minute that must be dedicated to Milan.”
Who would you save if you had a say in the matter?
“I’m not there and I’m not responsible. I’m watching from the outside, as a person who loves Milan: I really care that the team gets back to how it was before because it’s our team. I can’t give advice, because I have no role in the club.”
There is talk of stars leaving in the summer, from Theo and Leao, maybe even Maignan. As a fan, is there any player you would definitely keep?
“I don’t want to get involved in the controversy of those who are leaving: it’s not my responsibility, I have no role.”
Would you like to have a role at Milan one day?
“I am where I am now [since January 2024 he has been president of the Ukrainian Football Federation]: I am trying to do my best in the position I am in, in such a difficult moment as you can imagine.”
You said that Milan are a special club: what makes it so, in your opinion?
“Above all the fans. And its history. We must never forget the history of Milan: it tells of Champions Cups, championships, great names, great players, managers, presidents, all those who have made Milan a great team.”
Are you optimistic that Milan can return to being a great team in a short time?
“We need to build a project. No one has a magic wand, but it would be nice to have a precise line, a clear idea of where we are going.”
Ibrahimovic is one of the faces of Milan from a managerial point of view: how do you see him in this role?
“He has taken on a great responsibility and is trying to do the best he can. He has played at a high level for Milan and cares a lot about the team.”
If your body allowed it, would you like to be able to still help Milan on the pitch now?
“No, not on the pitch. I think everyone has their time and I’ve had mine. I don’t think I can do better than those who are there, so let’s leave it alone.”
