The Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has made plenty of headlines in the past.
The club’s own supporters most often have been those negatively affected by his actions.
However, even Sheffield Wednesday fans will have been stunned by this latest from Chansiri.
Talk about an own goal! The total opposite of the bizarre positive, when he somehow extracted £3m of Newcastle United’s money in compensation back in 2019, when for whatever reason Mike Ashley was so desperate to have Steve Bruce as his latest stooge.
Anyway, this is what the Sheffield Wednesday owner has now done… incredible.
Sheffield Wednesday official statement – 9 August 2024:
‘The rise of counterfeit shirts continues to become increasingly evident in the football industry.
We respectfully remind supporters that as well as being inferior in terms of quality and potentially unsafe due to materials used, counterfeit shirts and their sales impact directly on club revenues.
Official SWFC merchandise can be purchased only from the Owls Megastore or online store.
Brand protection teams work together with the relevant authorities to remove counterfeit selling websites and will continue to do so.
Offline, all parties concerned will remain diligent in making every effort to close down the illegal trade of counterfeit goods.
To that end, requests for lettering and/or numbering on any counterfeit shirts brought into the Megastore will be declined.
Although we cannot prevent supporters from wearing counterfeit shirts away from Hillsborough, we do respectfully request that such products are not displayed inside the stadium. Anyone found to be wearing a fake shirt inside Hillsborough could be asked to leave, with information passed on to the relevant parties.
Thank you for your cooperation.’
I still can’t believe this.
Two things we all know.
Football shirts are very expensive (apparently £69 in the case of Sheffield Wednesday, £79 for long-sleeved).
A large number of football fans buy far cheaper copies when on holiday in places such as Turkey, or through the post from likes of China.
We all understand that football clubs, whether Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United, or whoever, would like all their fans to buy the official (and expensive) ones, but as for doing something with regard to anybody ‘caught’ wearing one…
Imagine if the Sheffield Wednesday owner goes ahead with these threats?
Imagine the scenario of a bloke inside Hillsborough with his kid, having spent £60 or whatever on Sheffield Wednesday tickets, only to then get kicked out of the ground, accused of ‘wearing a counterfeit shirt’???
With then also ‘information passed on to the relevant parties’ by Sheffield Wednesday?
How exactly could they even prove the person wearing a cheap copy, knew that they were wearing one?
It could have been a present off someone.
Back in the Mike Ashley era and refusing to give him any more cash, we used to get our kids fake Newcastle United shirts from China and they never had a clue they were anything other than legit. They thought we were the best parents in the world!!
Like all other clubs, I have no doubt Newcastle United will go after anybody manufacturing and/or selling pretend official NUFC gear, but kicking fans out of St James’ Park on suspicion of knowingly wearing a cheap copy of an official shirt…
