The Owls could finally be about to enter a new ownership era.

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly "very close" to completing a takeover agreement that would bring to an end the Dejphon Chansiri era at Hillsborough Stadium.

That's according to a report from widely respected Sheffield-based journalist Alan Biggs via his X account on Friday morning.

Biggs states an agreement with a party is on the verge of being completed, but reaffirms that there would still be numerous boxes to tick off such as due diligence and EFL checks before a complete takeover of Sheffield Wednesday could be finalised.

However, it would now appear that Dejphon Chansiri's turbulent reign, that has lasted just over a decade since purchasing the club in January 2015, is about to come to an end.

The wishes of Owls supporters everywhere may finally have been heard.

Biggs' report suggests that Chansiri has, after long last, agreed to sell Sheffield Wednesday with a takeover agreement with another party described as being "very close."

In a separate post, Biggs says that whilst he's unsure of the identity of the potential buyer, he has heard that US businessman Tilman Fertitta is one of the contenders.

Fertitta, 68, is the current United States Ambassador to Italy and San Marino, and is the owner of the NBA basketball team, the Houston Rockets.

According to Forbes, he has a net worth of $11.3 billion.

Whilst nothing is finalised as of yet, today's revelation is a very clear step in the right direction when it comes to a sale of the club - something the vast majority of Wednesday fans have been hoping would happen for quite some time.

American business mogul, John Textor, is a figure who is known to hold an active interest in purchasing the club, whilst The Star have also claimed that it's their understanding that there is at least one other "serious contender" to buy the Owls from Chansiri, who has links to Monaco.

A report from The Star in mid-June also revealed that they'd spoken with an intermediary who'd been trying to help a sale of the club go through, with conversations having been observed between "high net-worth individuals" and the intermediary where positive discussions have taken place regarding interest in buying the club at an agreed market value of between £40-50m.

They also confirmed that they'd seen conversations with Chansiri, in which the Wednesday owner appears to have claimed he's rejected bids as high as £160m for the club.

Whoever this unnamed party is that appears to be on the verge of taking over Sheffield Wednesday is, will find themselves with the huge and privileged responsibility of breathing life into a proud and historic football club that is on its knees.

This is the Steel City though, and Owls supporters have proven themselves to be a tough and resilient bunch, and now their patience, perseverance and belief that brighter days will return may finally be about to be rewarded.

Indeed, during the Chansiri era, they've had to endure play-off heartbreak in the early days followed by a subsequent decline through the Championship, accompanied by a points deduction in 2020, before eventual relegation to League One in 2021.

They've seen their club return to second tier level in 2023, but just in the past few years, supporters have seen numerous delayed payments to HMRC, players and staff seeing wages go unpaid with players handing in their notice as a result, with subsequent transfer restrictions imposed on them by the EFL - and that's just financial issues.

Manager Danny Rohl has performed a U-turn and returned to the club this summer after distancing himself from the team as he sought a move away, but it's understood that a large number of players now don't want him to return as their manager for the 25/26 season.

Then there's been issues with the club's training ground not being ready for the start of pre-season - in short, the club has just been in an unfathomable mess.

However, a new owner now looks set to be given the chance to pick up the pieces, and start a new and exciting era at Hillsborough, and get Sheffield Wednesday moving back in the right direction once again.
