Sheffield Wednesday: Positive Danny Rohl update emerges amid Sunderland talk | OneFootball

Sheffield Wednesday secured Championship survival by the skin of their teeth, and with one eye on progressing next season, there is positive news coming out of Hillsborough.

Danny Rohl was the mastermind behind the Owls' survival, and now, having taken some time to rest and recuperate after what was arguably a very stressful end to the season, talks are set to be resumed about extending his contract at the club.

Currently, the German's deal runs until the end of next season, but having admitted that he would like to extend his stay beyond that and begin a new project, chairman Dejphon Chansiri will sit with Rohl and agree a new deal.

Danny Rohl likely to commit to Sheffield Wednesday

As per The Sheffield Star it's looking very likely that Danny Rohl will commit to Sheffield Wednesday, which is bound to make many Wednesday fans beyond happy and will leave many hoping that this positive development can be the catalyst to further positives in the season to come.

As reported in the article, the update is that Rohl will be returning to England, following a break with family back in Germany, by the end of this week to begin extension talks.

It is understood that both Rohl and Chansiri have already undertaken positive talks following the immediate completion of this season, but these further talks will be more about the long-term future and what, if any, projects there are in the pipeline.

There is a desire to reward Rohl too for his excellent work throughout the season too, as Wednesday's survival was an unlikely one considering it was their first season back in the second tier since 2020/21.

The German has been a long-admired candidate on their managerial appointment shortlist, but with these contract talks set to go ahead, Rohl will most likely be taken off that list as any potential meeting with him will only be delayed till after these new contract talks have taken place.

This will only be further frustration too, as, when Rohl seemed to be a front-runner, ahead of reported candidates such as Will Still, there was the stumbling block of a heavy compensation clause to be paid if Sunderland wanted to prize him away from S6.

It is still unclear whether the Black Cats have a new manager lined up, as despite the aforementioned Will Still now being available following his departure from French side Reims, there has been little to no noise about who will be appointed.

However, while the Black Cats may be feeling a little angry about this news, the same cannot be said for Wednesday's playing squad.

There has been no update as to who will be staying on at Hillsborough into next season, and who will be departing on a free transfer, or transfer-listed following the end of 2023/24 regular season.

The positive news then may end up contributing to a few decisions, regarding renewing or departing, being made at this late stage with as many as 11 players having contracts confirmed to be expiring this summer.

Any confirmation is far from being made in regards to Rohl extending his stay just yet, but Sheffield Wednesday fans can perhaps start to dream again of Championship stability, and a rise up the table in 2024/25.
