Sheffield United are interest in signing former Brentford defender Ben Mee.
Sheffield United are interested in signing former Brentford defender Ben Mee, according to reports on Monday afternoon.
The 35-year-old is a free agent after departing the Premier League side this summer, and had previously been linked with Steel City rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, earlier in the transfer window.
However, according to The Star, the Blades have made a move to sign Mee as a solution to their defensive issues, which have contributed to their defeats in the opening two matches of the new Championship season.
The ex-Brentford man was a Championship promotion winner with Burnley in the 2015/16 season, and could now look to repeat that feat with Sheffield United ten years later.
Mee has reportedly been invited by the Yorkshire side to train with them, with a view to a contract being offered to the veteran defender, should he impress Ruben Selles.
It's been a rocky start to life back in the Championship for Sheffield United, who are currently propping up the rest of the division along with their city rivals having lost both of their opening games.
Selles' side have been exposed defensively in recent matches, with the Hull City boss reportedly looking to add two new faces to his backline, and the latest reports from The Star suggest he's found one of them.
Free-agent Mee has come off the back of three strong years at Brentford, and is now in the hunt for a new club. Now, it seems Bramall Lane could be his destination, after previously being linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday.
The Blades have reportedly invited the 35-year-old to train with them, with a view of potentially joining them for the 2025/26 campaign.
The start of the season has been nothing short of disastrous for Selles and his side, with a 4-1 humiliation on home soil against Bristol City kicking off the campaign, followed by a cup defeat to Birmingham City, and then another defeat on Saturday at the hands of Swansea City.
It's clear that the defence is an area that needs to be worked on, as Sheffield United boast little quality in depth in the heart of their defence, and could use an experienced head in the dressing room.
That's why signing Mee seems like an absolute no-brainer for Selles, if he wants to fix his short-term defensive woes. The veteran defender will bring an assured and composed head to a very shaky unit.
Being a free agent, the move possesses little risk for the Blades, and they could reap huge rewards by bringing in a hugely experienced player, who has tasted promotion in the Championship once before, which is ultimately still the club's aim this season.
