FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit has issued a damning verdict on Everton’s interest in Michael Cooper.
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Sheffield United will be hoping to bounce back from their play-off final anguish under new boss Ruben Selles.
The Blades recently parted ways with Chris Wilder for a second time after losing at Wembley to Sunderland for a place in the Premier League, with the former Reading and Hull City coach taking charge to hopefully bring about a promotion push.
Expectations will be high as the club looks to bounce back to the top-flight at the second attempt, with plenty of teams showing in the past that it is possible after an original setback.
Failing to gain immediate promotion back to the top-flight, some impressive performers will undoubtedly get linked with moves to the Premier League, with shot-stopper Michael Cooper no exception.
The former Plymouth Argyle keeper, who made 43 appearances last season for the club, has been touted for a move to top-flight outfit Everton, with Alan Nixon reporting that the Toffees are prepared to pay £5 million plus extras for the 25-year-old, despite having Jordan Pickford still on their books.
With this in mind, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit has reacted to the latest summer speculation about the Blades’ number one.
Speaking to Football League World, Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy (aka Blades Ramble) has discarded Everton’s interest in Michael Cooper, insisting that the rumoured fee is nowhere near enough to prize him away from Bramall Lane.
Jimmy told FLW: “People will have to rob a bank to get Michael Cooper out of Sheffield United, and if Everton think £5 million is going to be enough, unless the extras are £25 million extra, then he's going nowhere.
“Why would he move to Everton to sit on the bench behind Jordan Pickford when he's starting every week in the Championship for Sheffield United?
"He's definitely good enough to play in the Premier League, I've no doubt about it. He's a very good goalkeeper, we got him for an absolute steal from Plymouth, but somebody's going to pay us big money to get him out of Sheffield United.
“He signed a four-year contract, he’s going nowhere, absolutely nowhere without huge, huge money on the table, and I'm delighted because he's going to be part of the foundation that sees us go really well this year, hopefully.”
Keeping 21 clean sheets last season, commanding his box brilliantly and establishing himself firmly as one of the Championship’s top stoppers, Everton’s £5 million bid for Michael Cooper is laughable from where Sheffield United are standing.
Cooper is entering the prime years of his professional career, and while he will want to play in the top-flight for as long as possible, a move to Everton surely won’t interest him if he is to be back up to Jordan Pickford.
He also signed for Sheffield United on a four-year contract, so it will take a significant cash increase to lure him away from Bramall Lane.
Cooper is one of the club's most important players, and will be a vital figure in helping them compete for promotion once again back to the Premier League. Valuing him so highly, Sheffield United will only sanction an exit if they receive an offer too good to refuse, so unless that happens, Blades fans should have no fears over his current future.
