Liverpool’s decision to leave Federico Chiesa out of their 29-man pre-season squad travelling to Hong Kong has stirred plenty of speculation, not least because of the calibre of clubs now circling. As Empire of the Kop reported, seven clubs are interested in a potential swoop for the 27-year-old winger, raising questions about his future on Merseyside.
Chiesa’s absence from the Asia tour, following a minor fitness concern, highlights the frustrating pattern that has marred his first year at Liverpool. Despite his impressive showing in the recent 5-0 win over Stoke, where he came on in the second half and netted the final goal, the club’s medical team felt it best he remain at the AXA Training Centre for further assessment.
“The latest such setback during a much-disrupted first 12 months at the club for the Italy international,” notes Empire of the Kop. Indeed, Chiesa’s Liverpool journey has been stop-start, with just 466 minutes played last season. For a player of his talent, those figures simply do not match expectations.

It comes as no surprise that several Serie A clubs are circling. Napoli are keeping an eye on Chiesa despite already strengthening their attack, and Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini sees him as an ideal tactical piece, though sales would be needed before a deal. AC Milan have shown interest through indirect talks, but finances could prove an obstacle.
Perhaps most intriguingly, a return to Juventus is “quietly gaining traction,” while Atalanta may make a move if Ademola Lookman departs. Even newly promoted Como, led by Cesc Fabregas, are eyeing Chiesa as a marquee signing. Beyond Italy, Atletico Madrid remain convinced of his qualities, further underlining the winger’s enduring reputation.
Despite the noise, it’s important to remember there’s still a window of opportunity for Chiesa at Liverpool. With Mo Salah set to miss part of the season due to the Africa Cup of Nations, Chiesa could be handed a vital role if fit. As Empire of the Kop pointed out, “he’ll be banking on the double-header friendly against Athletic Bilbao and the Community Shield” to stake his claim.
The Anfield faithful have shown their support, with Chiesa’s chant ringing out loudly last season despite limited appearances. Whether the club hierarchy opts to loan him out, sell, or keep faith for another campaign remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt he will have options if he does move.
The club faces a delicate balancing act. Chiesa is eager for game-time to boost his chances of making Italy’s World Cup squad, and regular minutes may be hard to guarantee at Liverpool under Arne Slot, especially if fitness concerns persist. Yet selling a player of his calibre after just one disrupted season feels premature.
For now, all eyes are on the coming weeks, where pre-season performances and behind-the-scenes assessments will determine whether Chiesa remains part of Slot’s plans or becomes one of the most talked-about transfers of the summer.
From a fan’s perspective, this Chiesa situation feels like a mix of frustration and curiosity. On the one hand, we’ve barely seen him at full throttle, yet every time he’s on the pitch, there’s a spark, a sense of unpredictability. His goal against Stoke reminded us why Liverpool signed him in the first place — direct, skilful, and with an eye for goal.
Arne Slot has already shown he isn’t afraid to rotate and trust his full squad, which is why part of me hopes Chiesa gets a fair crack this season. With Salah off to AFCON, we will need options out wide, and if Chiesa can stay fit, he could almost feel like a new signing. But the reality is, after last season’s limited minutes, no one could blame him for wanting more guarantees elsewhere.
Seeing clubs like Juventus, Napoli, and Roma circling feels like a warning. If Liverpool let Chiesa go now, we might end up regretting it, watching him light up Serie A again. For now, I’d say: give him until January. Let him prove himself, stay healthy, and show why we all sing his name. If it doesn’t click, fair enough, but it’s too soon to give up just yet.
