AS Roma could present Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips with the opportunity to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer.

The 28-year-old is expected to depart east Manchester just two years after signing a six-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, with the England midfielder having made only six starts since a £42 million move to Manchester City from Leeds United.

Phillips, who spent the final six months of the 2023/24 campaign at the London Stadium with West Ham, has made just 31 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side since moving from Elland Road in July 2022.

The midfielder made two starts for Manchester City during the most recent campaign, and has been an unused substitute on 45 occasions, despite winning six trophies including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League since signing from Leeds.

Phillips featured 10 times for West Ham during his short-term switch to east London, making eight Premier League and two UEFA Europa League appearances for David Moyes’ side.

The Englishman was forced to return to the Etihad Stadium before the conclusion of his loan spell at the London Stadium however, with Phillips suffering a season-ending hamstring injury during a turbulent time at the Hammers.

Phillips was sent off against Nottingham Forest, and was involved in an X-rated incident with West Ham fans at St James’ Park after a last-gasp defeat to Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a return to boyhood club Leeds and a season-long loan switch to Merseyside with Everton for the 2024/25 campaign, with Phillips also currently expected to be involved in Manchester City’s pre-season tour of United States later this month.

A transfer to the Italian top-flight could also be on the cards, with Serie A side Roma ‘prepared’ to sign the midfielder for £20 million this summer, according to the information of Manchester City insider ‘Tolmie’s Hairdoo’ on X.

Phillips isn’t the only player considering an exit from the Etihad Stadium in search of regular minutes this summer, with full-back Sergio Gomez linked with a move to Real Sociedad, after the Spaniard featured just 15 times for the Sky Blues during the 2023/24 season.
