Serie A round up: Roma clinch title without playing | OneFootball

Roma clinched their second consecutive Serie A title without kicking a ball in anger. Juventus’ 2-0 defeat to Inter handed Alessandro Spugna’s side the silverware due to the insurmountable gap between the league’s top two clubs.

Juventus 0-2 Inter

Juventus went into Friday’s clash knowing they needed a win to extend the Serie A title battle with Roma by at least one more week. However, those hopes were effectively quashed by Inter’s clinical first-half performance. Elisa Polli slotted the ball into the bottom corner to put Inter in front inside the opening 20 minutes. Malta international Haley Bugeja added a second before the break, with her effort proving too hot to handle for Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

With Juventus unable to produce a response, the Roma squad could celebrate the successful defence of their Serie A title. The champions will have the chance to add to the Scudetto when they face Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final on May 24th.

Fiorentina 4-4 Sassuolo

Fiorentina are now winless in six Serie A matches after they gave up a 4-1 lead in Saturday’s home clash with Sassuolo. Madelen Janogy opened the scoring in the 18th minute, before Cecilia Prugna pulled Sassuolo level on the half-hour mark. Pauline Hammarlund guided the ball into the top corner to quickly restore Fiorentina’s advantage. Janogy grabbed her second with the help of a deflection before Emma Severini headed home to give the hosts a sizeable three-goal cushion at the break.

As the contest drifted into the final 15 minutes, Daniela Sabatino produced a thumping strike against her former club to give Sassuolo a renewed sense of belief. Kassandra Missipo then won the ball high up the pitch to slot past Katja Schroffenegger and cut the deficit to one. With momentum in their favour, Sassuolo completed the dramatic comeback in the 91st minute when 17-year-old substitute Manuela Sciabica calmly slid the ball home to spark scenes of jubilation.

Sampdoria 2-2 Pomigliano

Aurora De Rita guided the ball home from Elisabetta Oliviero’s low cross to give Sampdoria an early lead in Saturday’s contest. As the game drifted towards half time, Marianela Szymanowski produced a spectacular effort to pull her side level. The 33-year-old sent her audacious long-range effort looping over the back peddling Kerttu Karresmaa.

Sampdoria looked to have snatched all three points when Sara Baldi scored with a sublime long-range strike of her own. The forward latched onto a loose ball to unleash an unstoppable shot into the top corner. However, Baldi saw her 91st-minute effort cancelled out by Debora Novellino, who hooked the ball home from a corner to rescue a point for Pomigliano.

Napoli 1-1 Como

Napoli are still on course to finish in the relegation playoff spot after they held Como to a draw at the weekend. Melania Martinovic swept the ball in from Dominika Škorvánková’s cut-back to send Como into the break with a narrow lead. The visitors led until the 79th minute when Marija Banušić produced a thumping volley to beat Astrid Gilardi and claim a crucial point.
