Serie A | Parma 3-1 Lazio: Unlucky Aquile taken down at the Tardini

Lazio’s winning streak ended in frustrating circumstances, as they saw two goals disallowed and a penalty revoked in a 3-1 defeat including Anas Haj Mohamed’s spectacular debut Parma goal.

The Biancocelesti were coming off five consecutive Serie A victories and were frustrated by Thursday’s Europa League draw with Ludogorets. Nuno Tavares was joined by Boulaye Dia and Matias Vecino on the treatment table. Parma still missed Adrian Bernabé, Mateusz Kowalski and Alessandro Circati, but Matteo Cancellieri had a point to prove against his parent club.

It was a dramatic start to the match, as after 70 seconds Nicolò Rovella swung the right boot at a Gustav Isaksen assist from outside the area and sent a wonderful, swerving finish into the far top corner. However, it was disallowed following a VAR On-Field Review for Rovella’s arm in the face of Anas Haj Mohamed in the build-up, a rather harsh decision.

Instead, moments later Parma took the lead instead, as Dennis Man pounced on a terrible Rovella back-pass towards Alessio Romagnoli and beat Ivan Provedel one-on-one.

Rovella remained in the spotlight, drilling just wide from distance, while Mario Gila needed a decisive sliding tackle to stop Matteo Cancellieri going clear in the box on Simon Sohm’s slide-rule pass.

Lazio thought they had equalised with a Taty Castellanos looping header that had beaten Zion Suzuki, but Norbert Balogh was there for a goal-line clearance.

Rovella’s bad luck continued, as he was booked for a high boot and will be suspended against Napoli next week.

Castellanos had the ball in the net on 37 minutes, but he was visibly offside on the Rovella assist over the top before hooking it in from a tricky angle.

Parma were rescued by another desperate goal-line clearance, this time Emanuele Valeri ready to deny Gustav Isaksen as he volleyed a Luca Pellegrini cross from seven yards.

There was more controversy in first half stoppages when the referee awarded a penalty as Mattia Zaccagni and Mandela Keita both went for the same loose ball. He changed his mind following the VAR review, seeing that if anything Zaccagni had kicked Keita.

The tension was sky high and a brawl erupted on the touchline before the break, with Lazio already extremely irritable after seeing a clear penalty denied in the Europa League on Thursday, even after the VAR On-Field Review.

Zaccagni’s trademark right-foot curler was deflected just wide, then on the resulting corner Zion Suzuki made a desperate reaction save on the Castellanos header deflected off teammate Alessio Romagnoli from point-blank range.

Moments later, Parma doubled their lead as Mario Gila gave it away in midfield, Gabriel Charpentier found Anas Haj Mohamed for a sensational first-time right-foot curler into the far top corner from outside the box. It was the young Tunisian’s first Serie A start and first goal.

Man dribbled past two Lazio players at the by-line to see his finish charged down for a corner, while Zaccagni and Loum Tchaouna also tested Suzuki at the near post before the goalkeeper’s flying save on a Tchaouna half-volley.

Something finally went the Aquile’s way late on, as Suzuki and Valeri had a miscommunication on who would deal with a loose ball in the box, so Castellanos pounced to bundle over the line.

Just as Lazio were laying siege to Suzuki’s goal, they were caught on the counter for 3-1 when Enrico Delprato started the run from his own half to avoid the offside trap on Gabriel Charpentier’s assist and kept his cool to beat Ivan Provedel one-on-one.
