Liverpool Transfers: Napoli Eyeing Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa in Double Swoop

Premier League champions Liverpool may be about to receive a welcome financial boost as Serie A side Napoli prepare a summer move for two Reds players. According to La Repubblica, Antonio Conte is keen on bringing both Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa to Naples, with the Italian club expected to formalise their interest in the coming weeks.

While Liverpool have already made moves in the market — including the capture of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen — attention is now turning towards player sales. New manager Arne Slot, fresh off a title-winning debut season, has been reshaping the squad but faces a tricky balancing act between reinforcing key positions and managing the club’s financial strategy.

The sales of Nunez and Chiesa could be pivotal in that effort, with the duo likely to rake in around £90million between them.

Nunez Exit Appears Inevitable

Darwin Nunez’s situation at Anfield has been gradually unravelling. The Uruguayan striker made just nine Premier League starts last season and has largely slipped down the pecking order. With Arne Slot favouring a more structured attacking style, the fit never quite materialised for Nunez, despite flashes of brilliance.

“Nunez has fallen down the pecking order, making just nine Premier League starts last season, and is being tipped for a move away,” La Repubblica noted.

There is no denying Nunez’s potential, but a fresh start under a manager like Conte — who is renowned for turning high-energy forwards into effective tactical pieces — may suit him better.

Chiesa Struggles to Stake His Claim

Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool career never quite ignited. Signed for roughly £10 million last summer, the Italian international struggled to find consistency or minutes. His time under Slot has been underwhelming, and an early exit appears increasingly plausible.

“Chiesa… also failed to secure a regular first-team spot, sparking rumours of an early departure from the club,” the report added.

While the fee received might not be earth-shattering, it would free up squad space and wages, crucial in a summer where Liverpool are linked with high-profile names like Hugo Ekitike, reportedly valued at €100 million by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Strategic Sales Could Fuel Ambitious Rebuild

Selling both Nunez and Chiesa would not only remove two underutilised assets but also bring in a significant chunk of funding for further reinforcements. Liverpool’s interest in Ekitike signals intent, but such a move requires serious financial planning.

“With Nunez and Chiesa potentially heading south to Serie A, the Premier League champions will get a much needed financial boost to carry out their remaining transfer business,” La Repubblica reported.

Slot’s squad overhaul is well underway, but navigating it with fiscal discipline is essential. These potential departures to Napoli could be the linchpin in completing an aggressive but calculated summer rebuild.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this Napoli interest is intriguing. Darwin Nunez always split opinion at Anfield. On one hand, his raw speed and chaotic energy brought unpredictability, but the lack of composure and tactical cohesion often left him misfiring. Arne Slot’s system demands clarity and discipline, and unfortunately for Darwin, he seems better suited to the more direct style that Antonio Conte thrives on.

As for Federico Chiesa, it always felt like a low-risk experiment that didn’t pay off. Despite his pedigree, he never truly found a rhythm in Liverpool’s setup. Slot’s focus on pressing and positional discipline exposed Chiesa’s inconsistency.

If both players move to Napoli, it could be a win-win. Liverpool cash in at a crucial moment, Napoli get two players with upside, and fans see the club moving closer to their next phase under Slot. It’s also notable that freeing up wages and squad spots might enable the club to finally secure a marquee name like Ekitike, giving the frontline the cutting edge it lacked at times last season, despite the title win.

With smart recruitment and a few calculated exits, Liverpool could make back-to-back titles a genuine possibility.
