Netflix is due to release a documentary focusing on the historic Spain 2023 Women’s World Cup win. The film, titled #SeAcabó: Diario de las Campeonas, tells the story of the triumph bookended by high-profile player strikes.

Focussing on player perspectives, the documentary features interviews from Jenni Hermoso, Alexia Putellas, Sandra Paños, Olga Carmona, Aitana Bonmatí, and others. It will be released and available to wait from November 1st, 2024.

The film is billed in English as It’s All Over: The Kiss That Changed Spanish Football. The actions of former RFEF President Luis Rubiales at the 2023 WWC Final and subsequent protests will feature heavily. Rubiales will stand trial in February 2025 for sexual assault and coercion.

Netflix documenting Spain women’s triumph

Netflix stated that the documentary begins in 2022. The Las 15 protest — when Spain’s national team players went on strike over historic mismanagement — is the likely starting point.

A year later, three of those players would return to win the World Cup. However, the team’s triumph was overshadowed by a non-consensual kiss during the medal ceremony. In the following weeks, it brought decades of systemic misogyny within Spanish football to light. The act itself, followed by the federation’s mismanagement, sparked worldwide protests and resulted in a change of leadership for both the RFEF and the women’s team.

Years of Injustice: #SeAcabó

The hashtag used by players, #SeAcabó (meaning ‘it’s over’) has since been adopted by women to highlight misogynistic abuse outside of football.

Speaking about the documentary, executive co-producers Javier Martínez and Luis Miguel Calvo were keen to highlight this wider impact, saying: “This is the story of how a group of exceptional women not only transformed the sport they love but also challenged and changed social perceptions and structures, inspiring future generations to fight for equality and recognition.

“It is a chronicle of resilience, passion, and triumph in the face of adversity, marking a milestone in the fight for equality in sports and society.”

#SeAcabó: Diario de las Campeonas debuts on Netflix on November 1st.
