Schalke appoint Miron Muslić as their new manager ahead of the 2025/26 season

Schalke have named Miron Muslić as their new head coach, appointing the former Plymouth Argyle boss on a two-year deal.

Schalke finished a roller-coaster Bundesliga 2 season in 14th place, only three points clear of the relegation zone. Karel Geraerts was dismissed as coach in September 2024, with his replacement Kees van Wonderen only lasting 209 days in the job. Between times, Jakob Fimpel oversaw four matches, across two spells, on a caretaker basis.

New coach Muslić makes the switch to the Veltins-Arena after a four-month spell at Plymouth, which ended in relegation from the English Championship, but also included a famous win over 2024/25 Premier League winners Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round.

Muslić told the club website: “I’m very grateful to all those at Schalke for placing their trust in me. From the very first contact, we had open and honest discussions. Together with Frank Baumann, Youri Mulder, Ben Manga and Matthias Tillmann, we discussed in detail what Schalke are looking for and how I can contribute. We’re determined to put that plan into action, and I’m ready to get to work with full conviction and passion.”

Muslić won eight of his 23 matches in charge of Plymouth, who ultimately finished three points adrift of safety. The 42-year-old previously spent two years in charge of Belgium's Cercle Brugge, after also coaching and playing professionally in Austria. He will oversee his first competitive game as Schalke coach when the new Bundesliga 2 season kicks off on the weekend of 1 August.

"In Miron Muslić, we’ve found the coach we wanted for FC Schalke 04,” said Frank Baumann, Schalke's board member for sport. "We are convinced he is the right man for this situation. We’re delighted to welcome Miron to Schalke."

Schalke won promotion back to the Bundesliga as Bundesliga 2 champions in 2021/22, only to suffer relegation the following season. The seven-time German champions (pre-Bundesliga era) have since posted two bottom-half finishes.
