Sport Bild reports that Schalke and former Königsblau and Real Madrid striker Raúl are in contact over him potentially taking charge in the summer.
The arrival of Frank Baumann as Sporting director at the Veltins Arena has solidified the idea that the future of head coach Kees van Wonderen is uncertain. He is viewed internally as not the right coach to lead the club back to the 2.Bundesliga, so it is looking very unlikely that he will be in charge next season.
Schalke have already begun their search for a new head coach and have already received two rejections.
Former Köngisblau head coach Domenico Tedesco held conversations about a potential return to Gelsenkirchen, but ultimately declined the role as he did not want to take charge of a second division side.
Paderborn head coach Lukas Kwasniok was also sounded out, but he wishes to gain promotion with his current side. On top of this, the German-Polish manager is also linked to replacing Christian Ilzer at Hoffenheim.
The name that is constantly linked with a return is Raúl. The legendary Spanish striker is currently head coach of Real Madrid Castilla and, despite having a contract until 2026 at the club, is open to leaving in the summer. Raúl has been in contact with Schalke management for several months and is waiting for inquiries before considering his options for heading into the summer.
