Manchester City have avoided a worst-case scenario when it comes to the ankle injury sustained by Savinho against Tottenham this week, according to reports.
The Brazil international has been a leading light in the attacking formation of Pep Guardiola’s side over the course of the season so far, since joining the club from fellow City Football Group side ESTAC Troyes over the summer.
The 20-year-old shone during a loan spell with Girona in La Liga last campaign, inspiring the Catalan side to UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in their history, and leading to a €40 million transfer to Manchester City.
However, there were strong fears during the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday night that his season may grind to a halt prematurely, having been stretchered off the North London side’s pitch with an ankle injury.
Leaving the field in tears, supporters and club staff were left sweating over the results of scans and assessments on Savinho upon returning to the City Football Academy on Thursday, but it seems as though the Premier League champions have avoided a worst-case scenario.
According to the information of PL Brasil’s Rômulo Giacomin, tests carried out by Manchester City have revealed that Savinho has sustained a sprain in his right ankle, requiring an expected recovery time of between seven and 14 days.
The positive outcome on the assessment will also come as good news for Brazil, with the reporting highlighting that the injury is unlikely to prevent him from making their next squad list for the upcoming November international break.
However, despite the positive scans on the winger’s ankle injury, it is highlighted that the 20-year-old will be ruled out of Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League encounter away at Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
An extended lay-off of up to two weeks would also leave his hopes of being available for selection against Sporting in the Champions League and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League next weekend in serious doubt.
Pep Guardiola is battling a number of other fitness concerns across his squad, and the addition of Savinho to his issues means he is heavily restricted in the wide roles, with both Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish also ruled out until after the upcoming international break.
Manuel Akanji, who also sustained an injury problem during the Cup exit at the hands of Ange Postecoglou’s side in midweek, revealed to television broadcasters that he is hoping to return to training on Friday, making himself available for the weekend’s clash at the Vitality Stadium.
