Mohamed Salah cemented his place in Liverpool’s history books on Sunday by becoming only the third player to score 100 away goals for the club.
His second-half brace sealed a 3-2 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s, extending Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points.
Salah’s 100 away goals form part of his remarkable 223-goal tally in just 367 Liverpool appearances, trailing only Ian Rush’s 161 and Roger Hunt’s 112 in the club’s away scoring records.
The forward’s historic record was achieved in a fiercely contested match, where he showcased Liverpool’s resilience by stepping up to rescue his side from a 2-1 deficit in the second half.
He equalised with a precise finish following a mistake by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, then calmly converted a penalty after Yukinari Sugawara’s handball to secure all three points.
The victory keeps Liverpool in commanding form at the top of the table, taking full advantage of Manchester City’s shock 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
While many people doubted Liverpool’s title chances at the start of the season, they have emerged as strong contenders, winning 10 of their opening 12 league matches.
However, the game at Southampton highlighted vulnerabilities that manager Arne Slot will want to address.
Liverpool initially took the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning strike after Flynn Downes’ errant clearance, but defensive lapses allowed the Saints back into the match.
Adam Armstrong equalised from a penalty just before half-time, and Mateus Fernandes’ well-executed counter-attack goal put Southampton ahead early in the second half.
Despite not being at their best, Liverpool’s ability to grind out results has been a hallmark of their campaign.
Salah continues to deliver in decisive moments, reinforcing his status as one of the Premier League’s all-time greats.
With only two teams in Premier League history failing to win the title after such a strong start, Liverpool will be determined to avoid joining that unfortunate list.
For now, Salah’s heroics and the team’s impressive lead make them the side to watch in the title race.
