Mo Salah has capped off a stellar season by claiming his third Football Writers’ Association player of the year award.
The Egyptian received 90% of the votes from over 900 FWA members which is the most any player has received this century, and joins Thierry Henry as one of only two players to have won the award three times.
The winger’s 28 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League were paramount for Liverpool as they went on to win the competition with four games to spare.
With three games to go Salah needs just three more assists to have the most in one Premier League season – a record currently held by Kevin de Bruyne and Thierry Henry. He already has the most goal contributions in one season with his 46 this year.
He got seven goals in the Champions League while also getting three in the EFL cup, helping the Reds get to the final.
Last month the 32 year-old put pen to paper on a new deal at Liverpool running until 2027 meaning that we will see much more of the award winner in the coming seasons.
It was an all Liverpool top two with his team-mate Virgil van Dijk came in second place while Newcastle’s Alexander Isak came third and Declan Rice came fourth in the standings.
FWA chair John Cross said: “Rarely has there been a more popular winner than Mo. His overwhelming victory is just a reflection of an incredible season.
“He continues to re-write the record books and his performances this season have obviously been key to Liverpool’s 20th title. It’s been a privilege watching him this season and it will be a privilege to welcome him to our dinner to celebrate his success.”
Arsenal striker Alessia Russo took home the women’s award, beating last year’s winner Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw of Manchester City with her current Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey coming third.
Russo has scored eight Champions League goals to help her side to the final of the competition while netting 12 times in the WSL.
