AC Milan’s legend, three-time Italian champion and two-time European champion, Ruud Gullit gave an interview to La Gazzetta Dello Sport recently.

He talked about the current Serie A season, how he sees the future of some clubs and his opinion about Joshua Zirkzee’s transfer to Manchester United.

He believes that the Dutchman should’ve joined Milan instead of United in the summer transfer window:

“Zirkzee would have done better to say yes to Milan instead of moving to England to Manchester United. He knew Serie A and for his development, another couple of seasons in this tournament would have been very useful, but in a top club like Milan. Now instead he is in a club that has many problems and that does not facilitate his growth. His numbers are not very exciting.”

Gullit also hopes that Zirkzee turns things around at Old Trafford, having scored on his debut against Fulham in the Premier League some weeks ago.

“I hope he can turn the tide after an inevitable period of settling in. He is good, there is no doubt about that, but it is hard to do well at United in such a historical moment.”

Milan were indeed close to signing the player in the summer until Kia Joorabchian’s agent demands made sure that the move never went through and United swooped in.

It is obviously an initial settling in period for Zirkzee, who has shown many glimpses of his link-up play at United, but he has also shown that his finishing needs to be better. But improvement may just be a matter of time.
