Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted drawing inspiration from the team's famous 1999 Champions League victory to help seal Thursday's dramatic comeback over Lyon.

The Red Devils had thrown away a two-goal lead as ten-player Lyon took them to extra-time in the Europa League quarter-final second leg, and the French side netted twice after the restart to seemingly seal a comeback of their own. However, three goals after the 114th minute saw United emerge victorious and book their spot in the semi-final.

The win drew obvious comparisons to the 1999 Champions League final, in which injury-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw United come from behind to beat Bayern Munich, and Amorim admitted he had been watching videos of the club's most famous night ahead of the game.

"I was watching the '99 documentary for inspiration," Amorim told TNT Sports. "The team were tired. At 4-2, you think it is over, but here it is never over. Here everything is possible.

"This is one type of moment that can change a lot of things. Sometimes we just look at the tactical and physical aspect. But these moments can change a lot in the players' minds."

Amorim went into more deal about his team talk in extra-time, naming four players who played an integral role in his shift in plans.

"At half-time in extra-time, it was to change the positions," he explained. "To try to be really clear about the position of Harry Maguire, trying to put Casemiro near the goal, Kobbie Mainoo near the goal, Mason Mount to cross balls, and try to explain that we need to score one goal, and anything can change.

"So we tried to push for the team, but of course, it is a difficult moment, and then you have to be really lucky to change the game. That was the case today."

Athletic Club await in the Europa League semi-final, with United traveling to Spain for the first leg on May 1.
