After months of looking, Manchester United seem to have found their new striker if the latest reports are to be believed.
Initially, on Jason Wilcox’s insistence, the Red Devils went after Liam Delap, only for him to snub United in favour of sealing a move to Chelsea.
Ruben Amorim’s preferred choice was Viktor Gyokeres but the ex-Sporting CP striker chose Arsenal instead. And due to Victor Osimhen’s wage demands, United stayed away, which allowed Galatasaray to take advantage.
As thing stands, Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig has been identified as the club’s top choice. A deal is far from close owing to his asking price.
Swap deal talks are also taking place, but interestingly, Talksport have claimed head coach Amorim is not exactly delighted with INEOS’ choice.
As per Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook, the Portuguese tactician is in favour of a Premier League-proven option like Ollie Watkins over the Slovenian.
A move for Sesko has the backing of recruitment chief Christopher Vivell, who signed the striker when he was part of the Red Bull group.
There are internal deliberations ongoing at United, and a bid for the Villa striker is also not ruled out. He will cost less than Sesko’s €70 million.
“The move for Sesko being driven by Red Devils head of recruitment Christopher Viviell. Sesko is one of two active options for Manchester United along with Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, though talkSPORT understands Ruben Amorim would prefer the latter.
“Villa don’t wish to sell the England striker, but United may still persist with talks and even test that resolve with a bid.
“They have not yet ruled out making a formal offer, albeit one below Villa’s £60m valuation. There remains internal debate at United as to whether to opt for proven Premier League experience or a younger No.9 with a high ceiling such as Sesko.”
Amorim is right to want a proven performer like both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. United’s recent track record with signing players with potential is not that great as seen from their acquisitions of both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
Both strikers have struggled to score consistently, and now, another could be headed to Old Trafford. Hopefully, United will be third time lucky.
