Manchester United registered a comfortable 4-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both scored twice, while Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes each provided two assists.
It was a major surprise to see Zirkzee leading the line, but he earned praise from United manager Ruben Amorim after the game.
He said (via BBC Sport): “It is everything for the player. He did a great job. It is good for his confidence.
“We had an idea, but it was not because I selected him that I had an epiphany – we needed fresh legs. The players are helping a lot – congratulations to them.”
Zirkzee has received plenty of stick for his poor performances. He scored on his United debut but failed to add to his tally in the next 17 games.
Amorim’s arrival sparked fresh doubts about his future at the club.
High energy is a non-negotiable trait for the new manager, which Zirkzee has been lacking over the past five months.
Amoriim handed him an opportunity to impress, and the striker did not disappoint.
The former Bologna man earned 7/10 in our post-match player ratings.
The two goals will boost his confidence, but he still has plenty of areas he must improve.
He won only two of 11 duels. Amorim will want a better return from his number nine.
