Inter striker Romelu Lukaku considers his strike in a 3-0 win during the 2020-21 season to be one of his favourites that he’s ever scored.
Speaking in the matchday program for this evening’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg match against Benfica at the San Siro, the 3-0 gave his recollection of a strike that put the seal on a memorable victory in the derby a couple of seasons ago.
Inter have faced off against Milan in a number of hugely important derby matches in recent seasons.
One of the biggest came in February of the 2020-21 campaign.
The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri had been battling at the top end of the Serie A table throughout that season, but after the winter break it was Inter who started to really hit their best form.
It was a derby match that gave either Milan the chance to rein Inter back and get back into the title race, or the Nerazzurri to really start to put daylight between themselves and their city rivals and give themselves reason to believe they could win their first title in more than a decade.
It was a statement performance by Antonio Conte’s Inter on their way to the title, and two goals from Lautaro Martinez ensured that they were on their way to three huge points.
Then, a lethal counterattacking goal finished off by Lukaku really announced the victory, and with it Inter’s intentions to finally chase down the Scudetto.
“If I think back on my most beautiful goals for the Nerazzurri, the goal for 3-0 in the win against Milan is certainly one of the best,” the striker said.
“Perisic played the ball, Nicolo and I were there, I remember saying to him, ‘leave it! leave it!,’ I got the ball and saw that there was space to run into,” he continued.
“I started running, first I wanted to go right, then I went left,” he recalled.
“I saw that there was a space in the goal, and I thought ‘I have to get this with the inside of my foot as hard as I can,’ and I managed to get the contact on I wanted and scored, it was a beautiful moment,” Lukaku said.
