It’s now looking increasingly likely that Matheus Cunha will be Manchester United’s first signing of the summer.

The Red Devils’ pursuit of Cunha has been rapidly developing over the last fortnight, with numerous outlets confirming that the club is his first-choice destination upon the culmination of the campaign – even without Champions League football to offer.

To make things easier for all parties, Wolverhampton Wanderers inserted a £62.5 million release clause into their talisman’s terms when he put pen to paper on a four-year contract back in February. Even after the deal was signed, fans were cautious that he wouldn’t be staying at the Molineux long-term, and had only agreed the extension to make for a more straightforward sale when the window opens.

This morning, Fabrizio Romano took to X/Twitter to confirm that negotiations were now advancing to the point of discussing the ‘final contract details’. United’s acquisition could be completed ‘very soon’, as Cunha is ‘keen’ on joining Ruben Amorim’s project.

Unlike recent attacking signings they’ve made, such as Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee, the 25-year-old Brazilian is proven in the English top flight. This season alone, he boasts 21 goal contributions in the form of 15 goals and six assists, marking a career-best goalscoring campaign since joining Wolves in 2022/2023.

His efforts have proven invaluable to the Midlands outfit retaining their place in the division for another term, so it’ll undoubtedly be a reluctant sale when they’re forced to part ways with the ex-RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid ace. They can, however, put the funds they recuperate to good use by acquiring his successor early on in the window.

Over the weekend, Cunha added to his tally with a goal and two assists at home to the already-relegated Leicester City, prompting Samuel Luckhurst to hail him as ‘majestic’ post-match before adding that he’d ‘improve most Premier League teams’.

Ruben Amorim will certainly be hoping that’s the case.
