Roma won’t be able to count on their best player Paulo Dybala in the final two months of the season. Further tests on his thigh injury suggested that surgery was the safest way to ensure a complete recovery. La Joya will go under the knife in the coming days, the team confirmed.
The striker will be operated on his left semitendinosus tendon. The idea of a conservative therapy, which would have included PRP injections, was weighed since he dealing with something more than a simple muscular strain, Corriere dello Sport informs. It would have sidelined him completely for a month. Afterward, his return would have hinged on the ensuing steps in the rehab and how he felt, with fewer guarantees about the outcome.
Dybala received immediate support from the Roma owners and his agent Carlos Novel, who travelled to Italy to help him with the decision. The club reached out to professor Georg Ahlbaumer in St. Moritz and former Bayern Munich doctor Hans-Wilhem Muller-Wohlfhart, who are among the top experts on this kind of issue.
The 31-year-old closes his season with 8 goals and 4 assists in 36 games. He reached the quota of appearances to trigger an automatic extension not too long ago. He’s tied to the Giallorossi until 2025.
The early reports were optimistic since there’s a tendon involved. It doesn’t soften the blow, but the silver lining is that the situation is a little easier to handle with just one game per week, plus Matias Soulé and Tommaso Baldanzi have found their footing in recent weeks. Besides the loss on the pitch, his future and extension become an ever worse can of worms now.
