Olympique de Marseille have had to improvise defensively in the last month, following various suspensions and lately an injury to captain Leonardo Balerdi. In to fill the gap has been former Atletico Madrid and Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, who has played most of this season as central defender in a back three. “I try to take things the most sensible way possible. I have a very direct relationship with the coach – which I like a lot,” said the Frenchman in a recent interview with L’Équipe on his relationship with his coach Roberto De Zerbi.Speaking at a press conference attended by Get French Football News, De Zerbi publicly called for a contract extension for the 32-year-old, even through he is currently under contact at Marseille until 30th June 2027. “Kondogbia has made an effort despite hardly ever playing in his position. It would be great if the club could extend his contract,” said De Zerbi following Marseille’s 5-1 win over Montpellier on Saturday evening. Kondogbia joined the club in the summer of 2023, and has often been favoured by coaches for his calm demeanour off the pitch and a certain amount flexibility on it – despite not necessarily being one of the stars of the show. A defensive midfielder by trade, Kondogbia has made 23 appearances in Ligue 1 this season. GFFN | George Boxall – reporting from the Stade Vélodrome, Marseille.
