River Plate returned to winning ways this evening after a 3-0 Apertura win at Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
Scorers: Driussi 35', Mastantuono 54', Aliendro 82'
Marcelo Gallardo's capital side came into the meeting on the back of four consecutive draws in Zone B, including a disappointing pair of 1-1 affairs against Talleres and Sarmiento.
The opening 45 minutes at Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo was defined by high-intensity back-and-forth play, with former Austin FC star Sebastián Driussi opening the scoring in the 34th minute from inside six yards.
Gimnasia boss Leonardo Madelón would make a triple change at the break, but despite his efforts to redefine the situation, River doubled the lead through Argentine youth starlet Franco Mastantuono after the 17-year-old weaved his way into the final third before dispatching a low drive past Nelson Insfrán.
It was the second big chance River created on the night, and it would be more than enough on the night for Los Millonarios to bank all three points away from home.
Veteran midfielder Rodrigo Aliendro would extend River's advantage in the 82nd minute with a confident finish between Insfrán's legs at the near post to put the Argentine giants out of sight.
With this result, River climb within three points of Independiente (28) while sitting one point adrift of Rosario (26) ahead of both club's weekend fixtures.
