Leading Serie A goalscorer Mateo Retegui has left the Italy national team camp due to injury, but is not expected to be sidelined for a significant period of time, which comes as a boost for Atalanta ahead of the league run-in.

When Retegui could return after dropping out of Italy squad

The Atalanta striker departed the Italy group on Wednesday after coming down with a muscular strain in his right thigh, which rules him out of both legs of the Nations League quarter-final against Germany on Thursday and Sunday.

According to updates from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Retegui has suffered a first-degree strain, which means that he could potentially be available for Atalanta’s upcoming Serie A fixture against Fiorentina after the international break.

The Pink Paper describes it as a ‘race against time’ for Retegui to be fit enough to return to action immediately after the international break, but if he is not available for Fiorentina, then he should definitely be available to face Lazio on April 6.

The 25-year-old is expected to be monitored on a day-by-day basis in Bergamo.

Fiorentina’s Moise Kean is expected to start up front against Germany in his absence, which could also bring an opportunity for Udinese’s Lorenzo Lucca off the bench.
