It appears Federico Chiesa’s time at Anfield could be drawing to a close. As reported by Milan News, AC Milan are “moving decisively” to secure the services of the 27-year-old winger, with “significant contact between the parties… expected in the coming days.” The Italian international joined Liverpool from Juventus with big expectations, but has struggled to carve out a regular role in an already competitive forward line.
Injuries and tactical inconsistency have marred his spell in England. With Luis Díaz, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo ahead of him in the pecking order last season, opportunities have been limited. As the MilanNews report highlights, “AC Milan’s interest in Chiesa is nothing new, but it’s now taking on a more defined profile.”
While Atalanta’s interest in Chiesa had been reported earlier – dependent on the sale of Ademola Lookman – AC Milan now appear to be the more proactive party. The MilanNews article notes that Chiesa is seen as a top target, “known for his speed, incisive dribbling, and powerful shot,” and is viewed as someone who can “add unpredictability and goals” to Milan’s attack.

Crucially, Chiesa himself is reportedly keen on a return to Serie A, and Liverpool are open to letting him go as they reshape the squad under Arne Slot. It seems all parties are aligned in principle, awaiting a formal offer to advance discussions.
For AC Milan, securing Chiesa would not only strengthen their domestic title challenge but also offer a boost to their European ambitions. As MilanNews put it: “His international experience… makes him an even more attractive prospect for a Milan side aiming to compete at the highest levels.”
A move back to Italy could revitalise Chiesa’s career. At just 27, there’s ample time for the winger to rediscover his form and reassert his presence on the European stage.
This transfer story is heating up fast. As MilanNews summarises: “The summer transfer market is heating up, and AC Milan is moving decisively to strengthen their squad for next season.” With all the pieces falling into place, Chiesa’s departure feels inevitable – and Milan could offer the perfect restart.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, Chiesa’s departure would be understandable, if a little disappointing. Many fans had high hopes when the Italian joined, given his breakout performances at Euro 2020 and his reputation in Serie A. But the move to Merseyside never quite clicked.
Some might argue he was never fully fit long enough to stake a claim, while others would point to Liverpool’s established wide options as a major roadblock. With Salah still integral, Díaz delivering last season, and the rise of youngsters like Ben Doak and Rio Ngumoha, Chiesa simply couldn’t break through.
Letting him go makes sense in the current climate. Arne Slot appears focused on building a more balanced squad, and recouping funds through Chiesa’s sale could help Liverpool strengthen in key areas, possibly midfield or defence. It also respects the player’s desire for more consistent game time – and at a club where he’ll likely be a regular starter.
Ultimately, Chiesa leaves Anfield with unfinished business. He showed glimpses of brilliance, but his Liverpool career will likely be remembered more for its missed potential than its highlights. Still, fans will wish him well if he does return to Italy, and Milan could be just the place to reignite his spark.
