Roma Step Up Pursuit of Aguerd but West Ham Hold Firm on Loan Refusal

Roma have re-opened discussions with West Ham United for Nayef Aguerd, as the Serie A side look to strengthen their defensive line. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Giallorossi made fresh contact with the Hammers this week to explore a loan deal for the Moroccan centre-back, but the Premier League club are not open to that formula.

Aguerd, 28, spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad, where he registered 25 appearances in La Liga. Despite a somewhat mixed campaign in Spain, he remains highly regarded on the European scene, and his experience across top leagues makes him a logical target for Roma, who are looking to add leadership and depth to their back line.

“New contacts between the Giallorossi club and West Ham for the loan of the Moroccan defender, but the English club is not open to this formula for the transfer.”

It is clear that Roma are not just looking for depth, but a reliable starter who can slot into Gian Piero Gasperini’s demanding tactical setup. Aguerd, who also boasts 91 Ligue 1 appearances for Rennes and 39 Premier League appearances with West Ham, fits that profile.

West Ham remain firm on sale preference

Despite Roma’s renewed push, West Ham’s stance remains consistent. The club are reportedly unwilling to sanction another loan and are instead seeking a permanent transfer or, at minimum, an obligation to buy embedded within any short-term deal. This aligns with the club’s wider approach this summer, which is to offload fringe players in exchange for immediate transfer income rather than speculative arrangements.

West Ham invested significantly in Aguerd when they brought him to East London in 2022, and although his form has fluctuated, they view him as a valuable asset. Letting him go without financial guarantees would not serve their current sporting or business models.

From the Premier League club’s perspective, Aguerd’s loan spell at Real Sociedad may have enhanced his visibility but perhaps not his market value. He remains a player of interest to clubs in Italy and Spain, but West Ham’s demand for a permanent transfer is unlikely to shift unless other financial conditions are met.

Roma’s interest in Aguerd is also significant when placed in the context of Gasperini’s style of play. Known for his preference for a three-man defence that presses high and demands positional awareness and aerial strength, the Moroccan defender offers many of the qualities Gasperini expects from his central players.

Aguerd’s ability to build from the back, as well as his strength in the air and comfort under pressure, make him a strong candidate to anchor the central slot in a back three or operate on the left side, where his left foot provides natural balance.

“Potrebbe essere lui il rinforzo giusto per la squadra di Gian Piero Gasperini.”

The former Rennes man would not need a long bedding-in period, given his familiarity with high-intensity leagues and tactical adaptability. For Roma, who remain short in central defence following key departures, securing Aguerd could represent smart business, assuming the financial package works for all parties.

Next steps in negotiations

At this stage, it remains to be seen whether Roma will return with a revised proposal that meets West Ham’s expectations. An obligation to buy or a structured permanent deal could yet provide a compromise. Roma will be wary of overcommitting financially, given their own budgetary constraints and Financial Fair Play compliance.

West Ham, meanwhile, are also considering their own options in central defence and are unlikely to leave themselves short. Whether Aguerd is reintegrated into Julen Lopetegui’s plans remains uncertain, but any exit will need to be on West Ham’s terms.

In the current market, players of Aguerd’s profile do not come cheap, and it is entirely plausible that West Ham are hoping for a bidding war, particularly with other clubs in Spain also monitoring the situation.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a West Ham perspective, the interest in Nayef Aguerd from Roma is understandable, but fans will likely support the club’s decision not to agree to a straight loan. After all, Aguerd was a key investment and played a role in the club’s UEFA Conference League success. Letting him leave temporarily, again, risks reducing his long-term value and offers little reward to the Hammers, especially if there’s no purchase clause.

Aguerd’s time in London hasn’t been without its frustrations, mostly due to injuries and inconsistency. However, when fit, he’s shown leadership, aerial presence and good positional play. Under Julen Lopetegui, there’s an opportunity for a clean slate, and many supporters would prefer to see him given another chance rather than sold on a cut-price deal.

If Roma truly value Aguerd’s experience and tactical qualities, then they should be willing to make a permanent investment. West Ham are right to be cautious and patient. With the window still open, the club are in no rush and could yet benefit from stronger offers or changing needs across Europe.

Supporters will be watching closely, but the consensus is clear: no more free rides for other clubs. Either commit to buying, or move on.
