Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has resurfaced, with credible insight suggesting that a formal move could be imminent. According to Sami Mokbel of BBC Sport, speaking on Redmen TV, Liverpool remain very much in the frame for the England international, despite the recent lull in updates.
While the tragic passing of Diogo Jota understandably slowed all off-field matters at Anfield, the gears are turning once again behind the scenes. Guehi, who captained Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory in May, is admired by Liverpool’s recruitment team, and Mokbel’s comments provide strong encouragement that a deal is within reach.
“It’s down to the clubs reaching an agreement. I don’t know if it’ll be necessarily that easy, knowing how Palace operate,” Mokbel stated, addressing the sticking point likely to be Palace’s valuation.
Palace are said to want £65 million, but with just 12 months left on Guehi’s deal and no extension in sight, their bargaining position weakens as the window progresses. Mokbel advises a measured approach:
“I think if Liverpool were to just go in with a low formal bid, what may happen is that you could risk antagonising the selling club.”
Instead, he recommends respectful and direct negotiations to avoid souring talks – particularly important given Palace’s firm stance in past dealings.
It’s believed that Guehi is open to the move, and that Liverpool may have already engaged with his representatives over the structure of a potential deal.
For Richard Hughes, who has already overseen some tidy business this summer, this is an opportunity to bolster Arne Slot’s defensive core with a Premier League-proven, athletic and intelligent centre-back. Guehi fits the age and profile Liverpool often target, and the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million could almost entirely fund this acquisition.

A compromise fee around £40 million seems more realistic, and there’s confidence among insiders that an agreement can be reached.
“All parties probably realise that there is a deal to be done here,” Mokbel concluded.
For Liverpool, it’s now about making the right approach at the right time.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this deal would tick a lot of boxes. Guehi has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent centre-backs and showcased leadership qualities by captaining Palace to their historic FA Cup win over Manchester City. At 24, he offers both present impact and future growth potential—something Liverpool have prioritised in recent years.
Fans might argue that £65 million is steep, especially for a player entering the final year of his contract. However, Palace’s reputation for holding firm shouldn’t be underestimated, and Guehi’s profile could justify a slightly inflated price. His comfort on the ball, recovery pace, and experience in a high-line defence make him a solid fit for Slot’s system.
There will also be relief among the fanbase that the club isn’t rushing into panic buys. If the club believes Guehi is the right man, taking time to land him properly – without burning bridges – is sensible. With the Quansah funds potentially covering most of the deal, this feels like one of the more shrewd and strategic moves the Reds could make this summer.
