The advantage of having versatile players was fully on display at FC Barcelona last season as Hansi Flick led his team to winning the domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
Despite not having very competent covers for some important positions on the pitch, the German coach was able to count on some players who are not naturalized in these positions.
For instance, Eric Garcia played as a right-back when Jules Kounde was injured in this last stretch of the season, and made some vital contributions for his team. Similarly, Kounde himself is a centre-back who has adapted to the right-back position. Ronald Araujo and Inigo Martinez have also played on the flanks despite being centre-backs.
Similarly, Frenkie de Jong has played both as a midfield pivot and an attacking midfielder. On the other hand, attacking midfielders like Fermin Lopez, Gavi, and Dani Olmo have played on the wings frequently, while the winger Ferran Torres has played most of his minutes as a false 9.

Thus, it is clear that Hansi Flick values versatility in his players quite a lot. And according to Mundo Deportivo, this is one of the reasons why the Liverpool forward Luis Diaz is one of the favorites of the German coach to strengthen his forward line.
Despite being naturally a winger, the Colombian played up to 15 matches as a false 9 last season, and his performances have been highly impressive.
1 of these 15 appearances as a false 9 came in the UEFA Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen, in which he scored a hat-trick. The other 14 came in the Premier League, against opponents like Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, in which he scored 5 goals.
