Chelsea don’t intend to recall Andrey Santos from his loan spell at Strasbourg this month, but they are weighing up whether to recall Lesley Ugochukwu according to The Athletic.
The Blues, who are currently on a four game run without a win were expected to have a quiet January, but injuries to both Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile has somewhat changed their plans.
Chelsea are looking at options to bring in a new centre back, with recalling Trevoh Chalobah from Crystal Palace a possibility, whilst they are also exploring a move for former player Marc Guehi, who has 18 months left on his contract.
It’s not just defensively where Chelsea need reinforcements, the Blues are also seemingly lacking depth in midfield given Romeo Lavia’s injury issues.
However, the Belgian could return against Morecambe in the FA Cup this weekend, and confirmed on social media he’s very close to a return.
Santos has been in superb form for Strasbourg this season.
The absence of Lavia has meant Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez haven’t been able to have a rest, whilst other options such as Cesare Casadei and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall evidently aren’t trusted by Enzo Maresca.
It’s unlikely the Blues will look to sign a midfielder which leaves them with two solutions, recalling either Ugochukwu or Santos.
Supporters would love the club to recall Santos who is absolutely thriving at Strasbourg where he’s arguably been their best player, whilst Ugochukwu is starting to feature more regularly now that Ivan Juric is manager.
However, it appears Santos won’t be returning this month with The Athletic reporting the Blues don’t intend to end his loan in France, although they are weighing up whether to bring Ugochukwu back.

The Blues need an extra body in midfield as unfortunately the club can’t rely on Lavia to stay fit, and they are a Caicedo or Fernandez injury away from having a big problem.
It will be interesting to see what the club decide to do, but the most likely solution will be to bring back Ugochukwu who impressed in pre-season, before integrating Santos into the squad for next season.
