According to Sky Sports News, and renowned transfer journalist, Patrick Berger, Borussia Dortmund’s senior-most player, Julian Brandt, is planning to leave the club this summer. Brandt and his father have already explored potential summer destinations. As of right now, there are no indications of a contract renewal from Dortmund.

Julian Brandt is Dortmund’s senior-most player, having made 181 appearances since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019. He’s played under the tutelage of several managers, and found the back of the net a total of 34 times in Black and Yellow. Brandt was used as a substitute in Dortmund’s 4-1 DFB Pokal triumph in 2021, lifting the trophy alongside the liked of Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, and Marco Reus. Brandt was also a key figure in Dortmund’s heartbreaking 2022-23 second-placed season, and the UEFA Champions League Final loss to Real Madrid in 2024.

This season, under both Nuri Sahin and Niko Kovač, Julian Brandt has struggled to maintain form. He’s scored just three and assisted five in twenty-two Bundesliga appearances. The playmaker has been a shadow of his former self and can’t seem to find confidence. As much as it pains me to write this, perhaps a new club will reinvigorate Brandt.

It’s also been alleged that Brandt was planning his exit last summer, but I question this validity. Why would Dortmund have entrusted him with the 10 jersey if he wasn’t part of their plan? He’s certainly played plenty of minutes this season.

If Julian Brandt does leave this summer, where would he go? His transfer value is roughly 35-million euros, but would another club pay that fee? Who might take his place? It doesn’t seem to be Gio Reyna. Perhaps Brandt will surprise us, find his form, and stay after all. Only time will tell, but this may be Brandt’s final season in Black and Yellow.
