Referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez has received some criticism for a “bizarre” booking in yesterday’s Champions League match between Sparta Prague and Inter Milan.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, lambaste the Spanish referee’s decision to book wingback Denzel Dumfries early on in the match.

Early on in yesterday’s Champions League match between Sparta and Inter, Spanish referee Hernandez Hernandez gave a yellow card to Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries.

The Dutchman went into the referee’s notebook after a coming-together with Sparta midfielder Qazim Laci. Because this was in the penalty area, Dumfries had appealed for a penalty.

However, referee Hernandez did not see it as a foul by Laci or a penalty.

And on the contrary, the official viewed the incident as a dive by Dumfries. Therefore, he booked the 28-year-old.

In the view of the Gazzetta, however, this was a “bizarre” decision by Hernandez Hernandez.

The newspaper confirm the referee’s view that it was not a penalty. The tackle by Laci was a fair one.

However, the Gazzetta suggest, there was no grounds to say that Dumfries had simulated contact.

It was a physical challenge by the Sparta player. It did certainly knock Dumfries out of his stride.

Therefore, the Gazzetta argue, it was extremely harsh by Hernandez Hernandez.
